LAVATER} AND A MEMOIR OF THE AUTHOR. EIGHTEENTH EDITION, Mustrated with upwards of Four Hundred Profiles. . “WARB, LOCK, AND CO. FONDON: WARWICK, HOUSE, Sacispupy SQUARE, EC, NEW YORK: BOND STREET, Lzene : « Parstef py M'Corquovane & Co. Linngen, 23430 6.07.01 ADDRESS. Lo * s “ZUM CHARACTAB OF A MAN MAY DE READ TH WIE FACE.” Lorn Kawes. . PHYSIOGNOMY, whether understoo8 in 8+ gost extensive or confined signification, 4s the onigin of “al “human decisions, efforts, actiong, expectations, feays,‘und hopes ; of all pleasing and unpleasing sensations, which arf occasioned by external objects, nog’ is ‘there @ man to be found who is#hot dailf influencéd by Bhysiognomy ; not a man who has not figured to himself as countenascé exceedingly lovely, or excecdingly hateful ; not a man who dogg not more or less, the first time he @hcountgrs a stranger, obgerne, estinmte, compare,«and jgdge him, according to appearfinces, although he might hitherto have been a stranger to the sgieuce ofsPhysiognomy ; it is, therefore, a manjfest truth, that whether or not sensible of it, all men are daily influenced by Physiognomy ; and as Sultzer has affirmed, every man, cousciously or uncon- sciously, understands something of Physiognomy. The most simple and inarjmate object has its characteristic exterior, by which it is not only distinguished as a species, but indi- vidually ; and shall the first, noblest, best harmonized; and most beauteous of beings, be denied all characteristic ? ‘But whatever may be oppbwed tg the truth and certainty of the science of Phygiognciny, it maust He admitted that “prere is no object, this considered, more important, more worthy of “observation, ynore interestitg than man, nor any iv ADDRESS, | occupation superior to that of disclosing the beauties and perfections of human nature. We do not contder any apology needful for the republi+ cation of a work go highly appreciated as Lavater's Essays on Physiognonfy. Several Hnglish and French translations have already appeared ; and although large editions in both languages were sold, it is more than Probable, the sale- was considerably limited on account of “the "high pricks at which ,eath of them were published. In sendin¥ forth a hew edition, it hag been our sn to combine uniformity, , economy aud portability ; Haw fat we may ‘have succeded in this respect, wé leave a discerning | Pubji¢ to determine. Drawings have necessarily, been made from: the Outline Portraits end other Kagraving$, reducing the size, so: as to represent:in Eighty Plates the same number of subjects, that were formerly given in three hundred ‘and sixty. At the “same time, great care has been taken to preserve th® spirit an@ idenfity of the countenances which were sefected by the Author as peculiarly adapted to illustrate the Stience of Physiognomy, renderin:, it at once a book of tiity, amusement, and instruction, suited to the man of intellect, study, and taste. Tux revision, which will be found at the conclusions of tho, work, reigtes to éhis prtiéular edition of the Physiegnomical Fragimenty, of Mr. Lavater, which" was published imdér the inspectipa of his . friend, Johm Michael Armbruster, in octavo, for the benefit of thése who could not afford to pur- chase thé quarto edition, The edjtor, Armbr§ster, shas changed the order of the fragments, and has omitted some few superfluous phesages, The friend was more capable of pereeiving where the author had repeated than was Mr. Lavater. Maving taken something away, the editor added something new; so that this is, perhaps, the work which best de-+ serves preference. We have the most irrefragalle evidence, from the revision above-mentioned, that Mr. Lavater perfectly ‘approved of, the plan of his friend, Mr. _ Armlfraster, * whose additions he has himself*corrected apd sanctioned.
