RIEU Michel EyquemMontaigne was born in 1533, tneeldest son ofthe seigneur de Montaigne. He was brought up to speak Latin as his mothertongue and always retained a Latin turn ofmind; though he knew Greek, he preferred to use trans- lations. After studying law he eventually became counsellor to the Parlement of Bordeaux. He married in 1565. After following the royal court in Paris and Rouen, he retired in 1571 to his lands at Montaigne, devoting himselfto reading and reflection and to composing his Essais (1580). As far as possible he remained aloof from the religious wars of the period, but sided with orthodoxy, authority and monarchy. He became Mayor ofBordeaux in 1581, a post he held for four years. He retired permanently to his estate in 1586 and died in 1592 while preparing another edition ofhis Essais. J. M.
