ABSTRACT
In 1990 the Arkansas State Board of Higher Education adopted
guidelines for the development of state minimum core curriculum response to state
legislation. This legislation provides that courses within the core shall apply to the
general education core curriculum requirements for baccalaureate degrees at state-
supported institutions and shall be fully transferable between state institutions. The
Board has approved state minimum core curricula for 2- and 4-year colleges and
universities. This document provides the minimum core curricula, with approved
revisions, for Arkansas public institutions of higher education.

APPROVAL OF REVISIONS TO THE STATE MINIMUM CORE CURRICULA
In April 1990, the State Board of Higher Education adopted guidelines for the
development of state minimum core curricula in response to A.C.A. §6-61-218. This
legislation provides that courses within the core shall apply toward the general
education core curriculum requirements for baccalaureate degrees at state-supported
institutions and shall be fully transferable between state institutions.
The Board has approved state minimum core curricula for two- and four-year colleges
and universities. Proposed curricula revisions must be submitted for Coordinating
Board approval. Copies of revised curricula appear on the following pages. (Revisions
are indicated in bold and italics.)
The following resolution is presented for Board consideration.
RESOLVED, That the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board
approves the revised curricula for Arkansas State University, Arkansas
Tech University, Henderson State University, University of Arkansas at
Little Rock, University of Arkansas at Monticello, University of Arkansas at
Pine Bluff, Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas,
Mississippi County Community College, North Arkansas College, Rich
Mountain Community College, University of Arkansas Community College
at Hope, University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Coordinating Board instructs the
Director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education to distribute the
state minimum core curricula to all state colleges and universities.

General Provisions
Within the framework of the State Minimum Core specified on the previous

page, each state institution shall propose 35 semester --credit hours from its
institutional general education core to be recognized for purposes of this legislation.
The total general education degree requirements at each institution may exceed the
State Minimum Core requirements.
Each state institution shall present its proposed State Minimum Core for

legislation. Institutions may present proposed changes in their State Minimum Core
to the State Board as necessary.

Students should be aware that score requirements for credit by examination

on such tests as CLEP or Advanced Placement vary among institutions
that institutions to which they transfer may have different requirements than
the requirements of the institution previously attended. Institutions are requested
to show on their transcripts the test scores utilized for awarding credit by
examination.
Frequently, courses with a grade of D do not transfer, and students should be

aware that institutional policies regarding the transfer of courses within D grades
may vary.
In math and science, higher courses than those required will be accepted for the

purposes of the State Minimum Core.
A receiving institution may be more lenient in accepting credit at its own election;
7.
however, the policies regarding the State Minimum Core do not obligate the
receiving institution beyond the stated courses and provisions.
A student who has enrolled under more than one State Minimum Core may select

that core which is to be transferred to the receiving institution.
