DOCUMENT RESUME JC 010 064 ED 448 795 TITLE Student Migration Report, 1998-1999. Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Austin. Community INSTITUTION Colleges and Technical Institutes Div. PUB DATE 1999-00-00 NOTE 79p. Numerical/Quantitative Data (110) Descriptive Reports PUB TYPE (141) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC04 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Community Colleges; *Enrollment; School Holding Power; State Surveys; *Student Mobility; Tables (Data); *Technical Institutes; *Trend Analysis; Two Year Colleges *Texas IDENTIFIERS ABSTRACT This document compares fall 1998 enrollment figures with fall 1999 enrollment figures in Texas public community and technical' colleges, with an emphasis on documenting retention and attrition patterns. The data are taken from the CBM001 Student Report, which records students enrolled on the official census date (12th class day) in semester-length courses, and the CBM Graduation Report, which records graduates for the academic year. Researchers used student identification numbers to track student/migration, categorizing students from 1998 according to whether, in 1999, they enrolled in the same institution; other public community or technical colleges; other public senior college or university; concurrently enrolled in two or more postsecondary institutions (neither of which was the original 1998 institution); or could not be identified through Coordination Board student record files in fall 1999. Tables summarizing results for each institution are included, separating students into categories by program (academic, technical, and tech-prep), gender and ethnicity. (PGS) Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document. 1998-1999 Student Migration Report Coordinating Board Texas Higher Education Division Community and Technical Colleges Austin, TX PERMISSION TO REPRODUCE AND DISSEMINATE THIS MATERIAL HAS BEEN GRANTED BY TO THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER (ERIC) 1 EDUCATION U.S. DEPARTMENT OF Improvement Office of Educational Research and INFORMATION EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES CENTER (ERIC) as is document has been reproduced received from the person or organization BEST COPY AVAILABLE originating it. made to El Minor changes have been improve reproduction quality. in this Points of view or opinions stated represent document do not necessarily official OERI position or policy. instructions for reading the 1998-1999 Student Migration Report The 1998-1999 Student Migration Report compares fall 1998 enrollment in Texas public community and technical colleges to fall 1999 enrollment at these institutions.. The data are taken from the CBM001 Student Report, which records students enrolled on the official census date (12 th class day) in semester-length courses and the CBM009 Graduation Report, which records graduates for the academic year. For this migration report, students were tracked using their student identification numbers. This study does not include students enrolled in the spring 1999 or summer 1999 semesters or students enrolled in flexible entry courses. The data also do not include students enrolled at private institutions. A detailed student migration report specific to your institution can be produced upon request, but will take additional time. Requests for a detailed student migration report or questions about the report should be directed to David Gill at gilldd©thecb.state.tx.us or 512/427-6233. The 1998-1999 Student Migration Report data are separated by graduates and non-graduates. Graduates include students reported on the CBM009 for 1998-1999 the academic year. Graduates include students who graduated at any time during the 1998-1999 academic year. The 1998-1999 Student Migration Report data are further categorized in five major ways: a. SAME INSTITUTION Students who were enrolled in the 1998 fall term at a public community or technical college and who returned to the same institution in the fall of 1999. b. OTHER JR Students who enrolled in the 1998 fall term at a public community or technical college and transferred to another public community or technical college in the fall of 1999. c. OTHER SR Students who enrolled in the 1998 fall term at a public community or technical college and transferred to a public senior college or university in the fall of 1999. d. CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT Students enrolled in the fall 1998 term at a public community or technical college and subsequently enrolled in two or more postsecondary institutions (a public community college or technical college and/or senior institution) in the 1999 fall term, neither of which was the original fall 1998 institution. e. CANNOT LOCATE Students who enrolled in the fall 1998 term at a public community or technical college and who could not be identified through the Coordinating Board student record files in the fall of 1999. a CONCURRENT. Below the aggregate totals for each institution is an additional category, SAME INST. AND Students in this category are those who returned to the same institution in fall 1999 and were concurrently enrolled at another institution in the fall of 1999. These students were included in the category SAME INSTITUTION. LIMITATIONS The data used in the 1998-1999 Student Migration Report is submitted to the Coordinating Board by the institutions. The institutions certify the data as being correct. Some institutions inaccurately report students who fall into the VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL category as academic students. Therefore, the ACADEMIC category may contain vocational-technical students who were not reported in the VOCATIONAL- TECHNICAL category by their institutions. academic or The numbers in the undeclared category represent students who may ultimately declare either an vocational-technical intent. colleges The current reporting system does not track students who transferred to private colleges, enrolled in out of state, or entered the workforce.
