Data for the study were collected from a total of 296 public and 390 private four-year institutions from the baseline year of 1996-97 to the trend year of 1999-2000. This portion of the study covers salary data for curriculum and instruction faculty at 80 public and 28 private institutions. A data table lists average salaries for both public and private participating institutions by faculty rank, faculty mix percent, and salary factors. Salary trend information is compared for public and private institutions for each of the two study periods with trend information for all fields and with the Consumer Price Index. The study found that for the 1999-2000 period the average salary of $50,242 for 1,241 curriculum and instruction faculty in public institutions was 14.2 percent lower and the average salary of $53,296 for 170 faculty in private institutions was 2.7 percent lower than the average salary for all faculty in all major fields, and, respectively, 1.0 percent per year above and 1.2 percent per year below the cost of living as measured by the Consumer Price Index. Appended is a list of the 54 selected academic disciplines and lists of the participating public and private colleges. First, the average faculty salary factors in the discipline/major field of all ranks of Curriculum and Instruction for the 1996-97 public study 12 percent lower than that above the in ALL MAJOR FIELDS (1.00); and for the 1996-97 private study it was three percent FIELDS (1.00). In both the public and average faculty salary factors for all ranks in ALL MAJOR in 1999- private studies the average faculty salary factors for all ranks in Curriculum and Instruction factors for all ranks in 00 were 12.0 percent lower and three percent lower than the average salary ALL MAJOR FIELDS (1.00), respectively. CPI and Second, the October 1999 CPI reflects an 6.3 percent increase over the October 1996 indicates that the faculty in Curriculum and Instruction in the public institutions received an average the annual annual salary increase of 1.0 percent above the cost-of-living. In the private institutions the cost-of-living. average salary increase was 1.2 percent below study in Third, in the 1996-97 and 1999-00 public studies and in the 1999-00 private assistant Curriculum and Instruction, the professor rank FAC MIX PCTs is lower than those for the higher at the professor rank. However, in the 1996-97 public study the FAC MIX PCTS were professor rank than at the assistant professor rank. the 1996- Finally, the hiring rate of new assistant professors in Curriculum and Instruction in the hiring rate of 97 and 1999-00 public studies and in the 1999-00 private study were higher than in the 1996-97 ALL MAJOR FIELDS. However, in the hiring rate for new assistant professors private study was lower than the hiring rate for ALL MAJOR FIELDS. discipline/major Because a significant data base of average faculty salaries in the academic this information field of Curriculum and Instruction has now been developed, it is anticipated that and professors. will serve as a valuable reference and evaluation tool for interested administrators 8 10
