InthecourseofourrecentstudiesonalargeseriesofspecimensofthegenusOnthophagus
collectedbyT. KIKUTA,Sabah(0cHIandKoN, 2005a; b; c), we found fouradditional new
speciesofthesubgenusOnthophagusthatwillbedescribedinthispaper.

Length:9.0-13.0mm:width:4.8-6.5mm(n=29).
Male. Bodysomewhat large-sized, oval,stronglyconvex dorsally; dorsal sidealmost
opaque,entirelyglabrous; ventralsideslightlyshining, partlyclothedwithyellowishhairs.
Color uniformlyblack, withoutmetallicluster;mouthorgansandpalpi dark reddishbrown;
antennaewith foot-stalksreddishbrown,clubsegmentsalittlepaler; legsmoreorlessreddish.
Headdistinctly transverse;clypea1marginalmostparabolic, notstronglyproduced for-
ward,broadlyborderedand a littlere exed, withmedianportion brie ytruncatedor rounded,
sidesgentlyrounded; clypea1suturestrongly carinate andalmoststraight orweaklycurvedat
frontalsection, weaklycarinateat genal sections; genastronglyproduced laterad, obtusely
angulateatthemiddlethoughroundedapicad;posteriorportionof headarmedwithapairof
verticallyerectedslenderhornsbetweeneyes, thehornalmoststraight thoughveryslightly
curvedoutwardinapical third;theinterspacebetweenthetwohornsaresmooth,notconnected
toeachotherbythecarinaorlaminathoughthetwohornsconnectedbytheshalpcarinainalit-
tlesmallermales;inminormales,thehornsreducedtoapairofshorttubercles;surfaceweakly
micro-granulose,sparselyandratherfinelypunctateinthemiddle,thepuncturesbecomingalit-
tlecoarseranddenserongenae,transverselyandweaklywrinkledonclypeus.

Pronotumstronglyconvexdorsally,1.44-l.58timesaswideaslong(n=3),withaweak
longitudinal impressionalongmidlineinbasal two-thirds;anteriormarginweaklybisinuate,
distinctlybordered,themarginalborderbecomingratherwiderinmiddle;lateralmarginsgently
roundedinfront,distinctlysinuatebehind, finelybordered;anteriorangleswellproducedfor-
wardandroundedatapex;posterioranglesobtuse;baseobtuselyangulateinthemiddle,not
distinctlybordered;discsteeplydeclivousjustbehindanteriormargin,withupperedgeofthe
declivityslightlyproducedasanobtuselyangulateprominenceat themiddle;surfaceslightly
micro-granulose,somewhatsparselyand finelypunctate, thepuncturesbecomingdenser and
coarsertowardsides.
Elytrastronglyconvex, 1.33-1.43 timesaswideas long(n=3), witheightstriaeone
alongepipleura1margin;striaeratherwidelyandstronglytodeeplyimpressed,finelyridgedon
bothsidesthroughout;7thstrianotcurvednearbase,almostparallelto6th;stria1puncturesdis-
tinct,eachdiameterslightlywiderthanstria1width;intervalsclearlyconvex,distinctlymicro-
granulose,alittledenselyandfinelypunctate,thepuncturesmostlynotdistinctlydefined.
Pygidiumcarinatebasally, feeblyshiningandslightlymicro-granulose,ratherdensely
coveredwithsmallshallowtransversepunctures.Protibiaeratherstout,withfourexternalteeth;
terminalspurspatulate.
Aedeagussomewhatrobust.Pahllobaseabout2.0-2.2mminlength(n=3),about0.9-1.0
mminapicalwidth(n=3).Parameresratherelongate,about13-1.4mminlength(n=3),with
eachapexalittleexpandedoutwardasaroundedtooth.
Female.Headalmost thesameasinthemale,thoughclypeusa littlestronglywrinkled
andapairofvertexa1hemsreducedtoshortsubconica1pointedtubercleswhichareconnected
byafinecarina.Pronotumwithanteriordeclivitynan-ower thaninmale, themedianpromi-
nencemoreobtuse.Protibiaewith fourexternal teethstrongerand terminalspursslightly
longer.

Notes.ThepresentnewspeciesiscloselyrelatedtoOnt1/op/1agus(0nthophagus)borneer1-
sisHAROLD fromSarawak,Borneo,butcanbedistinguished from thelatterby the following
characters: 1)dorsalsidedistinctlymat, withpronotumandelytrastronglymicro-granulose,
whereas in 0. borneensis, thedorsalside isshining, with thepronotumandelytraweakly
micro-granulose;2)intervalsofelytraslightlyconvexandsparselycoveredwithsmallbutdis-
tinctpunctures,whereasin0.borneensts,thosearefairlystronglyconvexandsparselycovered

traratherdensely clothedwithyellowish-whitesuberect1onghairs thehairs on the former
becomingclearlylongerandreflexednearposteriorangles;pygidiumdenselyclothedwithsim-
ilarhairsasthoseonelytra,thoughalittlelonger. Ventralsidealittleshining,somewhatdense-

(n=1).Parameresabout0.7mminlength(n=1),eachwithoneapicaltooth.
Female.Headlessproducedforward, withclypea1margintruncateorweaklyemarginate
atthemiddle;clypea1suturewithfrontalsectionstronglyandratherbrieflycarinate,thecarina
wellcurved,genalsectionnotcarinate;vertexwithanopenedV-shapedcarina,whichisdis-
tinctly raisedoneachsideandalmost interruptedatthemiddle;surfaceweaklymicro-granu-
lose,denselyandfairlycoarselypunctate,andtransverselywrinkledonclypeus.Pronotumsim-
ple,withaslightlyraisedlongitunalcostaalongmidlineinanteriorhalf,thecostawithasmall
tuberclealittlebefore themiddle.Protibiaeshorter than inmale, with four strongerexternal
teeth;terminalspurlonger.

Male.Bodymoderate-sized,oval,stronglyconvexdorsally;dorsalsidelessshining, with
pronotumandelytradenselyclothedwithyellowish-brownsemi-recumbentlonghairs,thehairs
changingintoalittlebroadscale-likeonesoneachmedianportion,headsparselyclothedwith
shorterect hairs; ventralsideslightlyshining, ratherdensely clothedwithyellowish-brown
hairs.Colorblacktobrownishblack;headandpronotumtingedwithfaintgreenishtocupreous
luster;elytrayellowishbrown,oftenwithalargebrownishvaguemarkingonthepostero-medi-
anpart;ventral sidealmostbrownishblack,withslightgreenishtocupreousluster;mouth
organs, palpi reddishbrown; antennaewith foot-stalks reddishbrown,clubsegments clearly
paler.

lowingcharacters:1)intervalsofelytraverydenselyandpartlyconfluentlycoveredwithstrong
punctures,and theconfluentpuncturesmostly formlongitudinal irregularwrinkles,whereasin
0.och1-omerus, theyaredenselyandnotconfluentlypunctate; 2)headandpronotumweakly
micro-granuloseandmorestronglypunctateinsteadofbeingshiningandlessstronglypunctate;
3) in themale, headlessproduced forward, withvertexa1laminabearingahemmorerobust,
whereasin0.oc11romerus, itismorestronglyproduced forwardwiththevertexa11aminabear-
ingaslenderhem;4)clypea1marginofheaddistinctlysinuousonbothsidesandvertexalcari-
nacurvedbackward,whereasin0.ochre,no,・us,theformerisweaklysinuousonbothsidesand
the latter isalmoststraight; 5)pronotumand legsuniformly brownishblack, whereas in 0.

Male.Bodyrathersmall-sized,elongate-oval,wellconvexabove;dorsalsidealittleshin-
ing though very slightly micro-granulose, entirely glabrous; ventralsidealsoslightlyshining,
partlyclothedwithyellowishhairs.Colorblack,tingedwithveryweakpurplishlusteronelytra
andpygidium;mouthorgansblackishbrown,palpireddishbrown,antennaereddishbrown, legs
somewhatpaler.
Headalmostsimplethoughalittletransverselydepressedbetweeneyesinposteriorpor-
tion;clypea1marginsubtrapezoida1inoutline,broadlyborderedandreflexed,withmedianpor-
tionnarrowlyanddistinctlyemarginate;clypeo-frontaIsuturecompletelyeffaced;clypeo-gena1

atapexinsteadofbeingveryslightlyandratherwidelyemarginateatapex;2)intervalsofelytra
arealmostfiat,whereasin0.co11insi,itisdistinctlyconvex;3)eachstriaofelytraisshallowly
andrather finelyimpressed,whereasin0.co11inst,it isdeeplyandalittlewidelyimpressed;4)
stria1puncturesofelytraareveryweakandpartlyill-defined,whereasin0. co11insi, thoseare
stronganddistinct;5)elytraaretingedwithweakcupreous luster insteadofbeinguniformly
