Prov. isdescribedunderthenameofSeat)hidiu,nbivl,on、x-uan1sp nov anditsdiagnosticchar-
acters are illustrated.Scap/1idiumco,nos(recordedfromZhejiangProv)andS grande
(recorded fromYunnanProv.,FujianProv andGuangdongProv)arerecorded fromthe
mainlandofChinaforthefirsttime.

ThegenusScaphidiumOLIVER, 1790 isa largegenusofsubfamilyScaphidiinae
(LATREILLE,1807). Uptothepresent,at least325speciesofthegenushavebeenknownfrom
theworld (LOBL, 1997; HosHINAand MoRIMoTo,1999; FIERRos-LoPEz, 2005) and 35 from
China.
Ingeneral face,ScaphldiumaswellasothergeneraofScaphidiinaearequiteeasytobedis-
tinguishedfromrestgeneraofStaphylinidaebythebox-likeandhighlyconvexbodyform,with
theelytracoveringtheabdomen,butnottheflexiblestaphylinoidbodyform.Tocomparewith
therelativegeneraofScaphidiinae, thisgenuscanbedistinguishedby thecombinationoffol-
lowingcharacters: robustspecies; headretractedunderpronotum; eyenotched;segmentsof
antennalclubsymmetrical;scutellumlargeandvisible; procoxa1cavitiesclosedposteriorly;
baseofelytronimpressed toreceiveextendedbasalangleofpronotum;centreofmetasternum
pubescentinmale;mesostema1keelbifidbasally.
Recently,weexaminedalotofspecimensbelongingtothegenusScaphidiuminourcollec-
tions.Andamongthem,onenewspecies,whichisdescribedhere,andtwonewrecordsfromP.
R.Chinaarerecognized.SincetheScap/udiumspeciesofP.R.Chinahavebeenwellrevisedby
1.LOBLinhisexcellentworkaft999,weinsertthesethreespeciestohiskey(markedas#) for
facilitatingtheidentification.
All thetypespecimensaredepositedinSHNU(DepartmentofBiology,ShanghaiNormal
University).Othermaterialstreated inthisstudyweredepositedinSHNUandSEM(Shanghai
EntomologyMuseum,theChineseAcademyofScience).

Description:Coloration.Maleandfemale: headdarkreddishbrown.Antennae(Fig 4)
segmentsI-VIdarkbrown,antennaeVII-Xblack,XIslightlylighterthantheformerfourseg-
ments.Pronotumwithtwolongitudinalblackfasciae,whiletheremainingsurfaceoftheprono-
tumreddishbrown.Eachelytronwithtworound,blackbasalspots:onehumeralspotandone
spotnear thesuture, andwithone“00''-shapedmedian fasciaandoneapical fasciawhilethe
remainingsurfaceoftheelytronyellowishbrown.Exposedabdominal tergites reddishbrown.
Prohypomerablackmostlywithyellowishbrown laterally.Prosternum,mesosternumand
metasternumblack. Abdominal sternite I blacktodark reddishbrownapicaridly, and the
remainingstemitesreddishbrown.Femoraandtibiaeverydarkbrown,tarsilightbrown.
Fronsandvertexfinelyandsparselypunctate,fronsatnarrowestpointbetweeneyes0.18
mm(holotype).
Pronotumnotraisedaboveelytra, weakly inflexedanteriorly,withlateraledgesslightly
sinuate; disca1punctationalmostevenlyfineandsparse,similartothatonfrons,consistingof
shallowpunctures;antebasa1puncturerowimpressed,notinterruptedatmiddle.
Elytraweaklyconvex,humeralareaslightlyraised;discal impressionabsent,discslightly
impressedapically,adsutura1area atandimpressed;discalpunctationvery noandsparseon
largeinnerportion,muchsparserthanpronota1punctation,obsoleteonlateralarea;eachelytron
with3disca1puncturerows, whicharealmostequal inlength;suturalstriapuncturerowrela-
tively fine, basalstriarowdeeplyimpressed,withpuncturesmuchcoarser thanthoseforming
pronota1antebasalrow.
Prohypomeraeven, withoutmicrosculputre, blackinmost innerportion, brown lateral
edges.
Mesepistemaveryfinelypunctate.
Exposedabdominal tergites very finely punctate and with microsculpture consisting of
punctures.CentreofstemiteIwithmicrosculptureconsistingsparsepunctures, lateralportions
withoutmesh-likemicrosculpture.
Legs(Fig5)long,mesotibiaeandmetatibiaecurved.
Aedeagus andmale sexual characters: Metasternum (Fig 6) impressed inmiddle, with
shortlodgedpubescence,andtwolonglateralsetal tufts.Profemora withventralsidecornuted
on basal thirdportion with ridge. Protibiaeeven, hardlysinuate. Aedeagus (Fig 7) 1.46-1.47
mmlong.Medianlobesubpara11e1posteriorbasalbulb,withtipangularandin exed. Parameres
slightlysinuate,almostevenlywide.Internalsac(Fig 8)withapicalcomplexofsclerites: one
apical insert,onetransverseX-likecomplex, twolargecomma-likescleritesandonetransverse

S takahashiiwithsubapical fascia.
In the keyofLOBL1999, thisspeciesshouldbeplacedat#10andcanbedistinguished
fromS formosanumbyspotspatternonelytra: eachelytronwith twobasalspots, one“00”一
shaped fascia onmedianportionandoneapical fasciawhile inS fo,-mosanumit withone
humeralspot,threeseparatedspotsonmedianportionandoneapicalfascia.
Fasciavariationiswidelyoccurredin thegenusS?aphidium,but it isundiscoveredinS.

Etymology. Thisspeciesisnamed inhonorof Mr.BIWen-Xuan, whocollectedsome
specimensusedinthisstudyandhelpedusalotinfieldwork.

pronotumandelytrawithpunctationdenseandclosewhileinS fitklensebearsonedisca1row
ofcoarsepunctures; remainingdisca1punctationobsolete;pronota1punctaionveryfine;3,pro-
hypomerauneven, withmicrosculptureconsistingofcoarseanddensepunctureswhile inS
fukiensesmoothandwithout impressions;4,stemiteIwithmicrosulptureconsistingofobvious
puncturesonthemostlargemedianpotionandevencoarseranddenserontheoutboardportion

reddishfasciaonmeso-andmetafemorawhilebodyandtheotherportionoflegsuniquely
black.

AustralianRegions.
During thecourseofmy studyonelateridbeetles fromSoutheast Asia, I foundavery
strange-formspeciesbelongingtothegenusCryptalausfromSulawesi,Indonesia.Ihadalsoan
opportunitytoexamineanothercloselyalliedspeciesfromthesameIslandthroughthecourtesy
of Dr. WataruSUZUKI. Afteracarefulexamination, it hasbecomeapparent thatthesetwoare
new toscienceas describedbelow.

Male.Length26.0-32.0mmandwidth7.5-9.0mm.Bodyblacktoblackishbrown,shin-
ing robust,subparallel-sidedandnormallyconvexabove. Dorsal surfaceclothed withshort,
recumbentandgoldenfulvousscale-likesetaeexceptforsuturalmarginsandbasalthree-fourths
oflateralmarginsonelytrawhicharescatteredwithwhitishsetae;ventralsurfaceswithrecum-
bentwhitishsetaeexceptforlateralmarginsofpropleuraandabdomenwithbrownishsetae.

Antennae(Fig5)short;apicalsegmentbarelyattainingtoaboutbasalfourthofpronotum;the
secondsegmentsmallandalmostglobose;thethirdtriangularandabout1.8timesaslongasthe
second;thefourthtriangularabout2.1limesaslongasthethird;thefourthtotenthclearlyser-
rate.
pronotumtrapezoidal almostaslongasthebasalwidth、sidesalmoststraight,moderately
convergent frombasetoanteriorangleswhichareclearlyarcuate;discmoderatelyconvex,
moreorlessbroadlydepressedalonglateralmargins;sulfacesparselyandin-egularlypunctate,
bearinganodulelikemedianlongitudinalelevationjustanteriortoscutellum;posterioran9leS
shortprojectingpostero-1ateradandobtuselypointedateachapex,withashortdistinctcarina
above.Scutellumalmostvertical,lingulatewithamedianlongitudinalelevationinbasal two-
thirds.
Elytraabout2.1timesaslongasitsbasalwidth;sidesalmostparallel inbasalhalves、then
