WINE LIST We believe wine is a very important part of the dining experience. Our goal at the Angus Barn is to enhance that experience by providing a wide variety of wines to please every palate and suit every occasion. To achieve that goal, we carefully select and cellar an extensive collection of wines including rare and vintage wines. While we do our best to have all wines on our list available, occasionally we maybe temporarily unable to provide a specific wine, and vintages are subject to change. Any unavailable selections will be noted by a red dot. Should you desire a wine that we are temporarily out of, a wine steward will gladly assist you in another comparable selection. If you wish to enjoy your own special wine in our restaurant, there is a corkage fee of $15.00 per bottle. It is with great pride and pleasure that we present this list. The Angus Barn Red dots indicate items currently out of stock. 1 The late Thad Eure Jr., who exemplified the meaning of hospitality, saw great potential in having a world class wine list which eventually led to the Wine Cellar. When North Carolina changed from a dry state in 1979 to “liquor by the drink,” it was then that Thad’s instincts in developing the wine list proved fortuitous for the Barn. After Thad’s untimely death in 1988, Alice and Van were challenged with completing Thad’s dream of building a world-class wine cellar. The coveted Wine Spectator’s Grand Award, won in 1989, is the highest achievement a restaurant can receive for its wine list. The award is given annually to very few restaurants worldwide that show an uncompromising devotion to the quality of their wine program. These restaurants must offer a minimum of 1600 selections and feature a serious breadth of top wine producers; outstanding depth of mature vintages; a selection of large format bottles; excellent compatibility with the restaurant menu; and superior organization, presentation and wine service. Currently the Angus Barn holds 23 consecutive Grand Awards that grace the hallway spiraling down to what was once a cluttered basement where wines were stored. Currently, only 80 plus restaurants through out the world claim the distinction of the Grand Award. In May of 1991, we officially opened the 27,500 bottle wine cellar with an accompanying dining room, Alice’s Room, named in Alice’s memory. In 2007, the Cellar expanded to include a 2nd dining room, Thad’s Room, named in Thad’s memory and a Wine Cellar Kitchen. The most recent vintages are subject to change. 2 Certified Wine Sommelier Henk Schuitemaker, often referred to as “The Wine Guy” has been with the restaurant for 26yrs. He is responsible for maintaining the wine cellar and wine list. Due to his diligence and hard work, the Angus Barn has maintained the Grand Award since 1989. Henk’s responsibilities also include the wine education of the entire service staff, public wine tastings and a special wine course that he teaches for future Sommeliers. He has cultivated an entire team of wine professionals. Please feel free to ask Henk or one of our Sommeliers to stop by your table to help with your wine selection. The staff listed below passed the Court of Master Sommelier’s first level course. The staff with an asterisk have become Certified Sommeliers through the Court of Master Sommeliers. Both levels require a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication. We are proud to introduce them to you. It has aromas of red berries which follow through on the palate. It is beautifully balanced with a pleasant, harmonious and refreshing long finish. An ideal aperitif. $1 of every bottle is donated to The Austrian Cancer Society 3 Elio Perrone “Sourgal”, Moscato d’Asti 2011 35.00 Piedmont, Italy A round, creamy Moscato, but that comes across as seriously intense when tasted next to its peers. White peaches, spices, jasmine and pears are some of the many notes that flow in this striking, fabulous Moscato. White Wine 4 Tegernseerhof “T26”, Grüner Veltliner 2011 27.00 Wachau, Austria Classic Grüner from the Wachau, Pale green-yellow in color. Juicy apple and mango fruit aromas complicated by cool wet rocks. Medium-bodied and firm, with nicely integrated acid framing the flavors of pepper, celery, and apple. 5 Tegernseerhof “Terrassen”, Riesling, 2011 35.00 Wachau, Austria It’s peach and apple aroma and flavors mingle with a white pepper note in this scented, yet powerful, Riesling. Balanced and ending with a mineral aftertaste. A dry, not sweet Riesling. 6 Domaine des Aubuisieres “Silex”, Vouvray 2011 35.00 Loire, France This Chenin Blanc has a nose of fresh quince, Persian melon, and honeysuckle that leads to a palate subtly silken in texture, impeccably balanced, and with a prominent wet stone minerality and bittersweet hints of candied citrus rind. 7 Greffiere “Sous les Bois”, Chardonnay 2011 35.00 Burgundy, France A delightful nose of white flowers and acacia, fresh apple and chalk. Refreshing, silken-textured, and surprisingly delicate on the palate, this unoaked Chardonnay’s under- stated but persistent finish delivers subtle notes of lees, chalk, and toasted nuts and grains. An exciting pre-dinner drink or with poultry, risottos, fish, escargots and goat’s cheese. 8 Auntsfield Estate SV, Sauvignon Blanc 2011 35.00 Marlborough, New Zealand Intense notes of fresh grass, hemp and lime slices with hints of chalk dust, yuzu (lemony) zest and lemongrass. Medium bodied, this partially oak-barrel fermented New Zealand “Savvy” has a good backbone of refreshing acidity cutting through the citrus and herbal flavors, finishing long. The most recent vintages are subject to change. 6 Adventure Page Red Wine 9 Cascina Gilli, Malvasia 2011 35.00 Castelnuovo Don Bosco Piedmont, Italy A slightly effervescent, sweet red wine with low alcohol (5.5%), made from one of the most appealing aromatic grapes, the Malvasia di Schilt; It’s characterized by an unusual marriage of freshness and complexity. Wild red berry fruit is gloriously evident with fasci- nating hints of blossoms, particularly wisteria and iris. 10 Hillinger “Eveline”, Pinot Noir 2010 35.00 Burgenland, Austria The scent of rose petals co-mingles with cranberries and red cherries as the wine opens in the glass. Hints of minerals, violets, Chinese Five Spice, and vanilla intermingle on the palate with the dominant flavor of red fruit. The finish is long and most pleasing. World class Pinot Noir. 11 Hillinger, Zweigelt 2010 35.00 Burgenland, Austria Zweigelt is a traditional Austrian grape variety. Brilliant, ruby red in color, it shows fresh cherry & blackberry aromas. Reminiscent of a full bodied Côtes-du-Rhone with deep berry fruit, pepper, zippy spice and a warm full finish. Enjoy with grilled meats and spicy vegetarian dishes. 12 Michel Gassier “Cercius”, Côtes-du-Rhone 2011 27.00 Rhone Valley, France A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah aged completely in concrete tanks. This is a big wine, especially for a 2011. Sweet Kirsch liqueur intermixes with notions of smoky camphor and roasted meats, followed by a powerful as well as elegant deep fruit. Medium to full bodied with a long finish 13 Domaine Saint Damien “Le Bouveau”, CDR 2008 30.00 Rhone Valley, France A blend of Syrah (vines planted in 2003), Cinsault (vines planted in 1954) and Grenache (vines planted in 1959).
