I would also like to recognize the help I received from Samantha Vale Noya, Routledge Assistant Editor, and Isabelle Cheng. The author gratefully acknowledges the proofreading contribution of Rob Brown, the invaluable bilingual assistance of Darya Smetanina, M.H.A., support of Elena Platonova, Ph.D., Anna Stebletsova, Ph.D., and P. Elana Pick, Ph.D., as well as my colleagues from the American Translators Association (ATA). In addition, without the love, patience and understanding of my beloved husband Jake Baldwin this dictionary would have never been completed. On using the dictionary This is the first full-size English–Russian Russian–English Medical Dictionary covering a broad range of medical terminology that has been compiled and published outside Russia. As a unique element, the dictionary features a bilingual Phrasebook consisting of 22 sections such as Emergency Medical Terminology, Bioterrorism Terms, Medical Insurance Terms, Disability-Related Terms, HIV/AIDS Terminology, Patient Medical History, etc. The Appendix offers an English–Russian List of Medical Roots, Suffixes and Prefixes that are predominately used in medical terminology formation as well as an English–Russian List of the most used Medical Abbreviations. The structure of this book resembles closely that of many Internet bilingual dictionary databases and includes headwords followed by subsidiary expressions as well as complete phrases – all listed in alphabetical order. Main entries are singled out in boldface; headwords as they appear in subsidiary phrases are substituted by the tilde ( ). Russian words are ~ provided with stress marks for proper pronunciation. Both English and Russian (but especially English) often attach multiple possible meanings in the other language. In making the proper choice, the reader will be aided by referring to the context of his/her translation. The Internet was used comprehensively while working on the vocabulary included in the book, which makes this dictionary very practical and current. If a user would like to comment or add any medical terminology s/he feels is lacking from the dictionary to its next edition, all remarks and suggestions will be well received by the author at [email protected].
