A population-explosion, hurried progress in education, and a massive increase in the reading public were met by a literary output of unprecedented variety and richness. In architecture and the visual arts there was an equal surge of produc tivity, which affected literature most notably through the Pre-Raphaelite move ment. Literature is here taken to include not only traditional genres such as poetry, drama, and history, but some scientific and technical writing, art-criticism and religious controversy, biography, auto biography, travel books, and books for children; over 170 authors are discussed. The whole field is surveyed in the light of present-day scholarship, but in the context of its contemporary background, and against such classical and other literary precedents as were still a potent influence on authors’ minds. The book opens with a chapter on the historical background, and the text is further supplemented by a chronological table of contemporary events, a select bibliography, and an index.
