Thepicture,however,ismorecomplicatedthanonesimplyofwinnersand losers. What varieties of English are we talking about here, and who are their ‘nativespeakers’?IstheresomethingdistinctwecanidentifyasEnglish,orisit merelypartofarepertoireoflanguageformstobecalleduponasnecessary?Is theloomingpresenceofEnglishanideaorareality,andinanycaseisitreally suchaproblem,andisitreallykillingoffotherlanguagesassomecommentators fear?IsthestatusandroleofEnglishthesameinallpartsoftheworld,ordoes itservedifferentpurposesindifferentcontexts?Whatformsofpracticalsupport dothosetryingtocompeteinthismarketplaceneedinordertobeamongstthe winners? These are all questions addressed by the English in Europe: Opportunity or Threat?project,whichranfromJanuary2012toOctober2014.Thisinternational researchnetworkreceivedgenerousfundingfromtheLeverhulmeTrustintheUK and was a partnership between the universities of Sheffield (UK), Copenhagen (Denmark)andZaragoza(Spain),CharlesUniversityinPrague(CzechRepublic) andtheSouth-EastEuropeResearchCentreinThessaloniki(Greece).Eachofthe partnershostedaconferenceonadifferenttopicandwithaparticularfocuson EnglishintheirownregionofEurope.Duringthecourseoftheproject120papers werepresented,reportingonresearchprojectsfromacrossEuropeandbeyond, providingforthefirsttimeaproperlyinformedandnuancedpictureofthereality oflivingwithandthroughthemediumofEnglish.
