HTHIS Dictionary was prepared and published to meet an immediatedemand in Garo School work, caused by substituting English text-books in place of the Bengali books formerly used, in the higher branches of study. Its preparation required haste, amidst the pressure of many other important duties. I therefore requested Modhunath Momin to draft definitions, in addition to his duties as teacher in the station school. This draft was corrected, modified and generally revised by Miss Ella C. Bond and myself with Modhunath. The pronunciation, introduction, and general editing have fallen to me. In the preparation of manuscript and readingof proofs, however, I have had the help of Miss Bond and Modhunath, also some help from Jon- sing Marak and Jobang Marak. It was printed by the Assam Government at the Secretariat Press in Shillong, where no one knew the language. But we hope to find it fairly well adapted to the purpose for which it was prepared, namely, that of furnishing the pronunciations and Garo definitions of the more common English word Tura, M. C.
