CHAPTER 1 APPRECIATING THE MARVEL OF HUMAN LIFE B efore I begin to discuss anything else, I want to take this chapter to begin to appreciate this thing called human life. Appreciating the astounding way in which our human body works. I am not talking about something mystical, instead of asking you to think about the complexities of our body, and isn’t it marvelous that we exist in the first place. Just think about our body that is made of billions and billions of cells working in sync with each other, the heart that beats untiringly 100, 000 times a day, our breath, and senses send millions of signals each day. Blood vessels extend thousands of miles, and yet at the end of the day not a single breakdown. So, the key to enhancing or even changing our life is by first appreciating it. One of the things I do to tune up for a great day is to take a few moments upon waking and reflect on what I am grateful for. I usually go with 3 things. It can be a combination of big things and small ones as well. An example of a big thing would be, “I am grateful for having my wife to experience and engage with throughout my life. I am so grateful for this”. A small thing, “I am grateful for the gift of hearing and my skin’s sensory ability to provide the sensation of feeling things. What a gift!” Now your turn. Take a moment, slow down your breathing, focus your attention on all the moving parts in your body now, connect and feel the billions of cells working in sync with each other in harmony. Feel and visualize your heart beating, your body breathing. Marvel and appreciate what is taking place for you! It is an ongoing symphony. Please take a moment for this now. Once you capture the marvel of what is taking place in your body, kindle your relationship with it, and start to truly care for yourself. Your body will be transformed forever. Our life is marvelous, considering that the chances of us being alive are just 1 in 75 million! I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. Only 1 in 75 million sperms get a chance to fertilize the egg. But things are not that simple, considering that females ovulate just once a month, and the ovum survives on average just 72 hours. Furthermore, many of the fertilized eggs just fail to establish themselves in the uterus before the start of a woman’s period, thus resulting in failure of pregnancy. So how is it possible that with all of these complexities that we still exist? The answer is simple; our DNA has much more information and power than most in the scientific world can even imagine. DNA contains all the information, and instructions, controlling the growth, maturity, and daily functioning of each and every cell in our body. It controls how the cells should behave together making a particular kind of tissue or organ be it heart, liver, skin, or muscles. Since the decoding of DNA, we know a lot about how it works. How this small bundle can control most things, and how the smallest error in its functioning can lead to diseases. Scientists are just starting to unravel and appreciate the power of DNA. Only a small active part of our DNA makes us what we are, and most of the DNA is dormant. It is the role of this dormant part that researchers are trying to unravel. DNA is coded quite like a spoken language, with its own set of rules, similar to the grammar rules of any language we speak. Meaning, DNA has a role to play in the way we speak, and on the other hand, words and thoughts have the power to influence the DNA itself, something long mentioned in spiritual science, but now being discovered by modern science. It means that DNA can be modified by using vibrations and suggestions, thus explaining how the power of intention and beliefs can heal our body, and have a potent effect on our mind. In fact, researchers in Russia are redefining the role of DNA in quantum science, space, and relative theories. Researchers think that DNA has the power to propagate information independent of space and time. Meaning that with the help of DNA we can communicate, and create a huge communication group, researchers are exploring such possibilities in a Global Consciousness Project. Though it is too early to say about the effect of such hyper communicating groups on our existence, DNA would surely have a central role in it. “The information stored in DNA must by no means be underestimated. So much so that one human DNA molecule contains enough information to fill a million-page encyclopedia, or to fill about 1,000 books.” -HARUN YABYA AUTHOR OF ETERNITY HAS ALREADY BEGUN Thus, the first step to good health is to appreciate the power of DNA, appreciate how the fusion of just two cells transformed into 70 trillion cells by the time of birth. By taking time to appreciate our body's wisdom we will better provide the discipline to care for it. The more respect we have for our body through appreciation and gratitude, the more respect we will have to take care of it. Everything is marvelous about the way we take shape from day one. Our brain is the first organ that starts forming also; then it is covered by the bony shield we call a skull in adults, after which our spinal cord, the powerful information highway starts developing. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral bones. Once the central computing and information highway is ready other body parts and organs start taking shape. The autonomic nervous system takes over the control of our internal organs, ensuring that heart beats as intended, digestive juices are secreted as required. I am not trying to teach you human anatomy, but just to underline the intricacies of the human body. Emphasizing the importance of the nervous system, and how it controls the functioning of each and every cell, playing a crucial role in health maintenance by responding to every challenge. However, if our nervous system somehow fails to respond to these daily challenges suitably, balance is broken. Yes, you got it, it leads to disease. So you must be asking yourself in what way can I support and ensure the healthy function of the nervous system? So summarizing all this in one sentence, just remember that: Doctor’s don’t cure, the body cures itself. When educating new patients coming into our office, I discuss three governing laws that optimize health and longevity. I playfully call them Dr. Larry Ism’s: 1. The body does not lie. It cannot. It can only tell the truth. So if there is a symptom it is there for a reason. 2. Instead of treating the symptoms, care for the systems that run the body. 3. The body is smarter than the mind of man. It has wisdom as a selfhealing, self-regulating system we are trying to learn more about and catch up too. Trust the body first! Make these simple laws your foundation now. They are the guidelines to keep you on the path, to keep you from wavering with your health moving forward. Thus, the good doctor is one who adopts a holistic approach, appreciates, honors, and respects the flow of the healing power inside each of us. However, there aren’t many such doctors, simply because medical schools don’t teach all this. Thus, it’s all up to you! Medicine takes an outside-in approach to treating symptoms in the body where what we are talking about is taking an inside out approach. Where medicine says there is something wrong when a symptom appears and they must treat the symptom, we are saying the body is giving us a signal, a warning sign for us to seek out where the imbalance is within. This medical philosophy works well in acute and life-threatening situations like broken bones or internal bleeding and let me tell you it has come in handy for me a couple of times when I had traumatic sport injuries. Most often the average symptom does not fit into this category. So what I want you to do right now is to thank your body for serving you in such a beautiful manner, appreciate your body for your existence, respect it for doing all the wonderful things for your existence. Respect and appreciate the abilities of your body, and treat it as the most wonderful thing you have ever owned. There is a story that goes as follows. “God comes down to you and says I am going to give you a car. It is free. You do not have to pay for it. I am going to pick out the car I want you to have, it is not your choice AND this is the only car you are going to have for the remainder of your life.” How well are you going to take care of it! It's time that you realize what a wonderful gift your body is, there is a reason for you being here. You cannot get a kind of life you want without a true connection to the importance of your wellbeing. Start today with a new gratitude that your life requires true energy, not just a halfhearted effort, rather aim for the maximum you have ever desired. INNATE INTELLIGENCE AND THE BODY’S FUNCTIONS As I already mentioned earlier it all started with a single cell, but how did that single cell transform into the massive body? Miracle? Well, not exactly, it is what Chiropractors have been calling Innate Intelligence for more than a century. It is something that is created at the moment of your inception; it flows through your body, it is what makes your body function in a way it should be functioning without a glitch. Our body is a wonder of Innate Intelligence. It operates automatically. It does everything from maintaining your heart rhythm to keeping your skin supple. Many people think it is the brain or heart that keeps the body alive. But if you have ever seen a corpse, someone who just died, they still have a brain and a heart. It is just not functioning anymore. What they do not have flowing through them is Innate Intelligence which activates these organs and body systems to work. Yes! THE HEART The heart is one of the sturdiest pumps, though weighing merely 11 ounces, it is just the size of the fist, it is made up of the strongest muscles in our body, and at the same time, it has tissues that are more delicate than tissue paper. These delicate tissues have neurons that make up almost half of the heart. Yes, the same tissues that make up the nervous system and spine. The beating of the heart creates powerful electromagnetic impulses; it is these impulses that are registered by an apparatus called the electrocardiogram or ECG. They flow to and from the heart in a torus. The torus is a shape similar to a donut. This torus stretches from the top of the head till the pelvic floor. The torus-shaped field is present not only in the heart, in fact, all molecules have a torus-like electromagnetic field. Thus we are able to connect with the rest of our body and the world around us. If a person is ill, it makes the heart susceptible. Each cell of our heart communicates with each other and work in synchrony with each other. This synchronous action of heart muscles helps to supply 6000 quarts of blood each day covering the distance of 60 000 miles through arteries and veins. The heart never stops or takes breaks, it is simple, yet one of the most critical parts of our body that functions to bring oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to the rest of the body. Now put one hand on the other and rest it on your chest over your heart. Hear it, feel it do its wonder, “I feel you and appreciate all you are. I appreciate all the beautiful and wonderful things you do to allow me to have life. Thank you, I love you”. There is an ancient Hawaiian practice still used today. It is called the Ho’oponopono Prayer. It helps clear negativity, provides a bridge for forgiveness and allows for greater connection with all people and things. We do not have the time to go deeply into it here, but it is simply four phrases said in any order that is appropriate for you and the situation at hand. Here are the four phrases; “Thank you, I love you, I am sorry, please forgive me, Thank you, I love you”. Say it a few times until you feel pressure released or a connection made. THE LUNGS Lungs are another brilliant example of innate intelligence at work. The primary function of lungs is to keep your body oxygenated, remove carbon dioxide and other wastes of metabolism. During inhalation, our rib cage expands to allow maximum air inside, while during exhalation the rib cage becomes smaller to push out the air. Ribs are quite dynamic, and muscles between them are flexible, allowing air to flow in and out of the lungs. When air enters the lungs, it reaches the small sac-like structure called alveoli, where it meets the pulmonary capillaries, and gaseous exchange takes place. Oxygen enters our body, and carbon dioxide is expelled out. Though automatic, respiration is a highly regulated process, enabling our heart to breath 20-30,000 times a day, working continually under the supervision of the autonomic nervous system. Again, take a few moments, put your hands on your chest and feel how tirelessly your lungs work on your behalf. Making these subtle connections gives a greater connection. With a greater connection our gratitude and appreciation expand. Feel free to find your own unique way to connect with the systems discussed below. THE SKIN Skin is not there just to provide the cover, in fact, it is the largest organ of our body amounting to about 16 percent of total body weight. Apart from protection, it helps to maintain body temperature, remove excess of water, salt, and toxins. Skin is the first line of defense for our internal organs from every imaginable danger, be it infection or ultraviolet rays. It even converts sun rays to vitamin D and thus helping to maintain healthy bones. The skin helps provide us with one of the most important factors in helping support our immune system and that is eliminating toxins from the body. We live in a highly toxic environment from the pesticides in our food, preservatives and artificial ingredients in our food, chemicals in our water, industrial pollutants all the way down to our daily household cleaning supplies, soaps, makeup and even air sprays. The skin is our largest eliminatory organ. It is here to save the day. This happens naturally on its own with 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells being replaced every minute. Exercising opens up the sweat glands and enhances detoxification through these glands. There are two basic sweat glands: eccrine glands and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands are responsible for the cooling effect. This is mostly water with some salt and potassium, but it also contains trace amounts of ammonia, uric acid and urea. Exercise is number one in activating the seat glands to aid in excretion. I am a fan of skin brushing as well as occasional saunas to help. Skin also plays a vital role in communication, sensation, expression of emotions, and even sexual attraction. It is made up of two layers called epidermis and dermis. Skin can also absorb oily substances. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM It starts from the mouth, from their onwards food reaches the stomach while passing through the pipe called the esophagus. Movement of food in the digestive system happens due to a rhythmic movement called peristalsis, an action that is similar to squeezing from one end till the nother. It is a brilliant example of innate intelligence at work. Once food enters our stomach, it is mixed with digestive juices and then passed on to the small intestine, where it is further broken down and processed with pancreatic juices and gallbladder juices. Digestive system provides the body with all the necessary elements. Carbohydrates are the source of energy, proteins are the building blocks, while fats serve as energy reserves, and are also essential for proper brain function. Minerals and vitamins are needed for complex biochemical processes. The fiber in the diet helps in the movement of food. When our digestive system is functioning as it should be, we are full of energy, able to fight infections. If we eat a diet poor in ideal nutrients, our health will suffer. If we overeat something, it may also have a negative impact. The body tries to store the excess of calories in the form of fat below the skin. THE LIVER The chemical factory of our body is the largest organ inside our body. It produces bile that helps to digest carbs, proteins, and fats. It also helps in building certain proteins.
