Exceptions are made for certain Taiwanese individuals known predom- inantly in English by names using other transliterative methods— for example, Chiang Kai- shek. Furthermore, Chinese- language terms are preferred when possible. For example, the city of Hualian is referred to using its Chinese- language name when both the colonial and postwar periods are being discussed, rather than the Japanese form, Karenkō, for the period prior to 1945. When citing team names, I have sought to utilize either the contemporary usage or usage that has become common in the present historiography. For example, the Jiayi Agri- culture and Forestry Institute team is regularly referred to in Chinese- language sources by the Japanese name Kanō rather than the Chinese title, Jianong. ix This content downloaded from (cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)59.120.225.187 on Tue, 11 Aug 2020 18:32:29 UTC(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0)(cid:0) All use subject to https://about.jstor.org/terms
