What about the possibility of an acknowledgement of political triumph by one of our former pupils, like Tom Braithwaite and Sophie Morrell who competed successfully alongside two MPs last term in a debate on political apathy? There is no doubt that we do have a number of outstanding individuals within the College who have the potential to succeed on the national or international stage like many of their predecessors. I make no apology for celebrating their current success, and am happy to hold them up as role models for others to admire and praise. Johan Malcolm in cricket has just been selected for the Kent Academy after already playing this term for England U17: he is currently at a trial for the national U19 side. Robert Bain is ranked number 2 in the country The Headmaster with Guest Speaker George Band, in race-walking. Richard Hart who many of you will have O.E. and David Atoms, Chairman of Governors heard playing his tuba at ECCO Pops is a member of the National Youth Orchestra, whilst David Le Prevost is a Headmaster's Address member of the National Youth Chorus. We have all enjoyed listening to the voice of Jay Flaxman over the Mr Band, Mr Chairman, Governors, Ladies and past two years: I would not be surprised to hear more of Gentlemen, Members of the College, her as she progresses through the Royal Academy of Music. Part of this year's College Day celebrations E ltham College is rightly proud of its heritage; over concentrated on sporting leadership and I cannot ignore the past weekend we have been able to celebrate the achievements of our Senior Prefect Tom Charlick, with former pupils, staff, parents and friends 100 who has led the school and his prefectorial body in an years of worship in the Chapel, and 50 years of sporting exemplary fashion: in addition his captaining of the 1st leadership. Today we are particularly pleased that Mr XV revealed his clear focus on teamwork and his George Band has agreed to be with us today in the year authority ensured that a side with modest talents had a celebrating 50 years since he was on that first successful more than successful season. At College Day Stephen expedition to climb Everest. I am particularly pleased to Smith, who captained the 1st XV 50 years ago, was able see him here because at Speech Day 50.years ago the to bring back 12 of his side from 1953. I wonder whether Guest Speaker failed to appear and no replacement was Tom will be able to attract back as many of his side in 50 used - so I apologize if my speech seems rather.long, but years and what will they remember from their last year at I thought I had better compensate in case history might Eltham. repeat itself. I also hope that he appreciates that this wonderful marquee was specifically chosen in his honour in an attempt to echo the line of the peaks in the Himalayas around Everest. Our recent celebrations and Mr Band's presence here today made me reflect on what the pupils of today might eventually achieve in their life time, and I wonder what we might be celebrating at a similar event in fifty years? Will it be the anniversary of successive drama groups going to the Edinburgh Festival, as Ms Bannister and her U6 group head off this year to perform as part of the Fringe with their reworking of the tale of Little Red Riding Hood entitled Shades of Red? Or will a celebration of outstanding achievement in sport focus on hockey, fifty years after the 1st XI recorded their first victory against Reigate. Perhaps we shall be organizing a golden jubilee concert of orchestral film scores composed by Richard Sands, whose wonderful composition New Horizons amazed so many of us at ECCO SPEECH DAY If they do come back I hope they will be able to from the Internet and other ICT gizmos, and the current remember with affection and pride what they examination specifications have reduced the freedom experienced during their time here. This a regular on ski trips, choir tours and is the Chairman of most generous donation to the College by Dr Gerald ECCO. Prue's other main asset is that she really does know everyone who is worth knowing, including the Moore OE is what I hope will be the start of a productive Duke of Edinburgh! I am confident that we shall relationship in Art with him. The statues have certainly maintain, close contact with her in her retirement. Mr brought that "Wow!" feeling to many pupils as they look Toby Beaumont leaves the History and Politics out of the Science Block, or enter the Dining Hall. If you Department to become Head of Department at Rugby haven't already seen them, I urge you to pass that way this evening. Exposure to such striking art can only enhance and enrich the quality of art produced by our own students under Mr Richards' and Mr Agate's tutelage. I suspect that most pupils this year will have a memory from the Antony Barnard Hall - whether it is Mr Hillary's production of Julius Caesar with Year 10, the extraordinarily high standard of acting in the A, AS and GCSE productions, the Jazz Night under Mr Levy's direction, or the termly Concerts including the first ever played by pupils in the Lower School, Years 7-9, all of which reveal the wide range of talent across the year groups. Some pupils might even remember the staff making fools of themselves in aid of Charity in the Staff School: he has been a driving force behind the Revue. introduction of Politics and hockey, and has helped I should like to digress for a moment from my theme to organize this year's Leavers' Ball. His energy will be play tribute to all members of the Eltham College staff. sorely missed and we wish him well with his future Every year we seem to work harder: the demands of the responsibility. Mr Ian Latham is returning to Northern curriculum and new legislation are taken on board while Ireland after being a member of the PE Department and the fund of extra-curricular activities, trips and Master i/c Cricket for the past three years. Pupils and opportunities for the pupils has definitely not staff will be sorry to see lan's positive enthusiasm depart diminished. But this year in particular I should like to and I hope that his "swan song" cricket Tour to the express my thanks publicly to the Common Room who Caribbean is a tremendous success. At a conference on education earlier this year moors of North Yorkshire are as appealing in the depths I heard a speaker describe teaching as the most of winter. Ms Julie Bannister will take her bow in important job in the world. In these days when pupils Edinburgh with the drama group before going to the seem to demand immediate and additional stimulation International School in Vienna. Finally Mrs Sarah Turk is SPEECH DAY retiring as School Secretary after eleven years at the College. During this time she has overseen most of the applications for pupil entry into the Senior School and for staff job applications: her calm methodical approach and experience will be greatly missed. We wish all our leaving staff future success and express our deep-felt gratitude for their contribution to Eltham College. Returning to my theme of what this year's leavers might or might not remember in 50 years time, I'd like to think that they will remember the transformation in the Chapel. Now I would be deluding myself if I were to suggest that most pupils regarded Chapel as a most memorable part of their school lives. But I still maintain that the Chapel contains the soul of the College. At team, or orchestra: not all the players are there to score worst, chapel services allow pupils a few moments of or to play solos: they are there to support each other, and quiet in which to reflect on the day ahead: at best, they they need not be the best players in the country. The are encouraged to reflect on the spiritual nature of life. same can be said about Eltham College: not all pupils are Young people's lives today are continually exposed to a going to be leaders in their field, but that should not world of quick-fire entertainment through the media: prevent them from experiencing that "Wow!" feeling, or this does often stimulate the senses, but how often does from being inspired. The balance between the individual it reach the soul? I suppose if the Chaplain and I were and the team can be very well illustrated by Mr Band and able to present stunning visual images or fight sequences the team that climbed Everest: although it may seem associated with films like The Matrix, we might grab your ironic to us that the good burghers of Bromley decided attention.
