Biography Singer Ella Fitzgerald was born April 25, 1917 in Newport News, Virginia. She sang with the Chick Webb Orchestra from 1934 to 1939 and was a recording artist for the Decca and Verve labels. Fitzgerald’s numerous recordings include the eight “Songbook” albums made from 1956 to 1964 featuring the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, and Johnny Mercer. She won many awards, including 12 Grammys. Ella Fitzgerald died June 15, 1996 in Beverly Hills, California. Scope and Content This collection consists primarily of published sheet music collected by singer Ella Fitzgerald. Also present are fourteen publicity photographs of Fitzgerald, a small amount of correspondence and notes, and published songbooks.
