IThe Forbes’ was the first and largest, and George Chiga was also a leading thought leader. They used the red cattle because they were purebred cattle that had been barred from the black Angus registry in 1918, and as such had known strengths and weaknesses. The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) was formed in 1954 as a bold experiment to select cattle based on objective measures instead of the fads that ruled the show ring, which at that time was represented in the belt buckle era. The number of firsts in the founding of the Association were many, including the requirement of weaning weights for registration, open AI, collection of yearling weights, adjustment of weights, and no nurse cows. Waldo Forbes, the first president of the RAAA summarized the objectives of the Association: “The policy of the Association is to 1904 Red Polled Angus Bull, discourage the more artificial practices in purebred cattle production Winner First Prize in Class, such as over fitting (a term at the time used for over feeding) and to Louisiana Purchase Exposition place its faith instead in objective tests, consisting for the most part of comparisons within herds of factors of known economic importance Four founders and known heritability. By making this an integral part of the registration system, Red Angus breeders feel that even faster progress can be made toward the ultimate goal of more efficient beef production.” This is not to say the Association was opposed to showing cattle as a form of promoting the breed. In 1956, the RAAA held its first National Performance Show in Fort Worth. Also implemented at the show was ultrasound to measure fat thickness to check for “over fit” cattle, which was such a problem in the belt buckle era. The placings were arrived at by a combination of objective performance measures and subjective scoring. Red Angus continues this tradition Beckton Larkabeau 0, 1954 of performance shows today by supplying judges with EPDs to son of Larkspur qualified as supplement their visual appraisal. 1959 Red Angus Navajo Chief a PRI Certified Meat Sire. The focus of the Association from the beginning was servicing commercial producers and the embrace of crossbreeding. Associate memberships were offered to commercial producers right from the start “to foster a closer working relationship and communication between the segments of the industry.” This focus of the RAAA continues to this day. Another thrust by many of the founders of the Association was “Angus for the Americas” as red was the common sense, heat tolerant color for North, Central and South America. This dream Roy Beeby would be realized in the late 1990s and early 2000s when Red Angus became the undisputed leader in export semen sales primarily to South America. This objective and commercial focus early on attracted some of 1977 Ideal Red Angus the largest, brightest and most colorful people in the industry. The Family, Enid School, list of these early members this new Association attracted is long Jim Shirm, OK and impressive including Forbes, Chiga, Beeby, Lorenzen, Redd, Haugen, Whitely, Bieber, Schuler, Leachman, Chase, Pioneer Seed Company, McPhee, Borland, Andersen/Ford, and Halfman. Most of these operations are still in business today represented by the 1965 Choctaw Chief 373 second and third generation. The opening of the herdbook also modern Red Angus trace, brought in some of the most forward looking commercial producers consider best all breeds into the breed including Leland, Robbins, Lane, Rolland and Wedel. The 1970s were good for the breed because when the type changed to larger framed, heavier muscled cattle, the Red Angus breed was 1982 Red Angus Glacier already producing this type of cattle. When the frame race started in Logan 210 the 1980s most Red Angus breeders kept their cattle middle of the road relying on their loyal commercial bull market to pay the bills. Despite the requirement of collecting performance data, major progress in economically important traits did not occur until mid-1980s when the Association became the second breed to 1992 Beckton Juliian GG implement an animal model to produce meaningful EPDs on the B571, Red Angus entire herdbook. Since then, the genetic progress of the Red Angus cattle has been nothing short of astounding. Red Angus also took a different path with its EPDs, trying to produce the fewest EPDs possible, to comprehensively describe the Economically Relevant 1995 Red Angus Ideal cow-calf Traits (ERT) for reproduction, growth, carcass and maintenance. 2 H WESTERN HERITAGE SALE THE HISTORY OF RED ANGUS This balanced approach paid off with Red Angus commercial females currently being the hottest thing on the market. Starting in the mid-1990s, RAAA entered another age of growth and popularity that is still enjoyed today. Red Angus was the common sense answer coming out of the frame race that had negatively affected other breeds. Also, then RAAA executive Bob Hough hired many key personnel, outstanding leadership was supplied by the membership, and the association would work closely with Colorado State University for key genetic breakthroughs. The list of accomplishments is long and impressive. In 1995 alone Total Herd Reporting (THR) was implemented; the first reproduction EPD was released in Stayability; the commercial marketing program was implemented; the Feeder Calf Certification Program became the first USDA Processed Beckton Red Angus Certified Program making Red Angus qualified for Angus branded The Foundation Herd of the beef programs; and RAAA negotiated the first value based grid with Red Angus Breed a major packer. Other accomplishments quickly followed starting with the Junior TKP BODACIOUS 693 program quickly becoming revitalized. In 1996, RAAA released its three-time Red Angus first carcass EPDs and would later become the first association to champion at Denver combine carcass and ultrasound into a single EPD. In 2003, the goal of objectively describing reproduction was completed when RAAA released the industry’s first reproduction sire summary, and in 2004, the industry’s first Maintenance EPD was released. This completed the goal of covering the basic areas of ERTs of reproduction, growth, carcass and maintenance. Leachman Abigrace In 2005, a group of breeders got together to organize a junior Red Angus as Champion, show during the summer since the national junior Red Angus show 2003 Fort Worth Stock Show was held generally during the winter in conjunction with the Red Angus national show. They formed the North American Junior Red Red Angus commercial cow Event outside the association to conduct a nationwide show as well with SimAngus calf satellite leadership events. This show has quickly grown becoming a substantial and well attended event. At the end of Hough’s tenure in 2007, the breed had grown from the twelfth largest breed to the fourth. Comstock would succeed Hough and fulfill a long sought after goal of forming a strategic partnership with other breeds. In 2010, this resulted in the American Simmental Association and RAAA’s formation of International Genetic Solutions, which now produces across-breed EPDs on the same base for the Mission Statement bred by majority of this nation’s breeds. This means there is now a common Larry Crossant EPD language for twelve breeds and more animals are added to this Beckton bull database every year than any other analysis. The success of Red Angus seedstock breeders’ commercial customers has always been a primary driver of the Association in both genetics and services. This was verified in a 2015 Journal of Animal Science research article confirmed that Red Angus outsold all other breeds at video auctions. Between IGS and Red Angus’ THR program, Red Angus has the most precise and reliable EPDs in the industry. Red Angus has a new, universally respected CEO with Tom Brink joining the Association.
