A 1885-1977 Eli Lilly: Life, James H. Madison Eli Lilly: A Life Eli Lilly's long life 1885-1977 extended over a wide range of endeavors in which James H.Madison he made major contributions. Under his active leadership, the phar- maceutical company hejoined in 1907 evolved into one ofAmerica's mok successful big businesses. Lilly pushed the Indianapolis company in installing mass production techniques and new initiatives in biomedical research, which brought major success with development ofinsulin in the 1920s. Although a hard-working busi- nessman, Lilly eventually acquired diverse interests outside the pharma- ceutical company In the L930s he nurtured a passion for prehistoric archaeology that led to significant scholarly publications and to financial and personal patronage that helpied bring archaeology to professional maturity. Later he became interested in history and historic preservation as he researched and wrote history, preserved houses, and actively encour- aged and sponsored the work of others. His interest in art led to a major collection ofChinese art. During the last three decades ofhis life Lilly gave away millions of dollars personally and through the Lilly Endowment.
