It was organized at Bogstad Manor outside Oslo in June 2013, under the auspices of the research project ‘Diversifying Publics and Opinions under Censorship: The Journals of Eighteenth-Century Denmark–Norway 1720–1814’. This project was financed by the Norwegian Research Council (2010–2014). The University of Oslo and Fritt Ord (The Freedom of Expression Foundation) provided addi- tional financial support, without which the conference could never have taken place and this volume could never have seen the light of day. The members of the editorial committee (Ellen Krefting, Aina Nøding, and Mona Ringvej) wish to thank them all for their support. Most of all, we would like to thank the participants and contributors to the conference for their stimulating papers, thought-provoking comments, and great company. <UN>
