The accident rates closely correlate to the level of activity within the industry, indicating that when work load is high, safety tends to receive less attention. Occupational accidents cause serious social and economic problems due to physical injuries and loss of life. The research approach used in the study was quantitative approach by using quasi experimental research design. The result of the study shows that Poor practice knowledge was 25% during pretest but reduced to 11.2% during posttest. Satisfactory practice knowledge was 33.3% during pretest but reduced to 21.67% during posttest. Good practice knowledge was 41.7% during pretest but increased to 66.6% during posttest. The present study findings, underlines the need for preventive education regarding safety protocol through public health personnel. KEYWORDS: Accident, video assisted teaching, safety protocol, construction site, construction Workers INTRODUCTION The construction work site is usually a chaotic place with incredibly high activities. The accident rates closely correlate to the level of activity within the industry, indicating that when work load is high, safety tends to receive less attention. The dangers faced by construction workers are alarming. The rate of death of workers is higher in construction industry than any other industry. Moreover, construction industry results in a high rate of death by injury. Although construction represents only 6% of US workers, it produces 20% of the fatalities.3 The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 defines occupational safety and health standard as, “a standard which requires conditions, or the adoption or use of one or more practices, means, methods, operations, or processes, reasonably necessary or appropriate to provide safe or healthful employment and places of employment” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports, the U.S. construction industry workers suffered more than 1,200 fatal occupational injuries. 12 6 Int J Pharm Bio Sci 2017 Apr; Special issue SP04 “Exhilaration of Nursing Sorority: Maneuvering the Quality” In 2008, the BLS report indicated a slight decrease in injury rate to be 5.4 cases per 100 full-time workers; yet these jobs remain inherently high-risk. Alarming statistics indicate that the construction industry accounts for 55,000 fatal injuries each year; meaning that one person is killed in site accident every ten minutes. Construction hazards may include falls from extreme heights, falling from rooftops, machinery failure, unguarded machinery, being struck by heavy construction equipment or bricks, electrocutions, silica dust, asbestos, lead, welding emission accidents, structure collapses, roofing and pavement tar, engine exhaust fumes, and other hazards. 4,19 Construction sites include residential construction, railway constructions, bridge erection, roadway paving, excavations, demolitions, and big painting jobs. Construction safety education is a vital part of the building trades. The construction agenda in the US was presented in National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA). The National Safety Council presents the significant advantages of safety to employers showing the higher profitability to their businesses by reducing accidents rates and maintaining high productivity. Safety training is mandatory for all construction workers. The work culture should encourage workers to participate in safety education programs. These programs must test the ability to recognize workplace hazard, the awareness of emergency plan, the ability to fill the safety check list, the implementation of safe procedures, the demonstration of professional attitude and maturity level. Maintaining the ability of workers to cope with physical and psycho-social demands at work becomes increasingly important in prolonging working life.1,18 Occupational accidents cause serious social and economic problems due to physical injuries and loss of life. Construction sector involves high risks due to its production processes and labor intensive characteristic and the sector is faced with financial loss in large scale because of occupational accidents. Occupational accidents have a significant importance for sustainability of enterprises due to their costs and environmental impacts. Construction industry uses and produces a wide variety of manufactured components in addition to basic construction materials. There is a major manpower requirement to maintain production in a construction site under hard working conditions with hazardous materials and machines. Construction is an extremely complex business, which means quite complicated tasks have to be performed simultaneously. Construction sector, which has a great contribution to economic development with its employment capacity and added-value to the economy, is one of the most important sectors in developing countries. On the other hand, occupational accidents frequently occur, due to the lack of preventive measures4,20 Lucy, et al. (1991) views accident as an unplanned and unexpected occurrence which upsets a planned sequence of work resulting to loss of production, injury to personnel, damage to plant and equipment, and eventually interrupting production flow.Achieving smooth work flow with minimal injuries requires not only appropriate construction planning, but also effect production management(Sack, et al. 2010).12,21 Improving safety in construction site remains a priority in almost every country around the world, because the construction industry stands out among all other industries as the main contributor to severe and 7 Int J Pharm Bio Sci 2017 Apr; Special issue SP04 “Exhilaration of Nursing Sorority: Maneuvering the Quality” fatal accidents (Ahmed, et al. 2000). Increasing safety is critical in the context of improving productivity and efficiency in construction industry. O.S.H.A (2005) ascertained that there are at least 60,000 fatal accidents on construction sites annually among the globe, the fatal injury rate for the construction industry is higher than national average among industries worldwide.16,17 In India, construction industry is the second largest employer when compared to agriculture. Throughout the world, the construction area of civil engineering is one of the most hazardous industries, the number of fatal accidents taking place at the construction sites is quite alarming and the major causes was found to be fall of workers from height and through openings5 In the present scenario, the Indian construction industry is quite large and complex involving largest technology as well as man power. On a par with the development of construction industry drawbacks in terms of safety and health is on the high side. Four factors of accident causation in construction namely, (i) working conditions, (ii) management failure, (iii) unsafe acts of workers and (iv) non-human related events. Among those factors are operative actions such as improper personal protective equipment, failure to follow instructions and compliance with working standards and carelessness, as well as over confident which account for almost 29.8 % leading directly to accidents.5 The total of 4,679 fatal work injuries were recorded in the united states in the year 2014. Indian construction labour force is 7.5% of the total world labour force and it contributes 16.4% of fatal global occupational accidents. India has the world’s highest accident rate among construction workers, according to a recent study by the international labour organization (ILO) that cited one survey by a local aid group showing that 165 out of every 1000 workers are injured on the construction site. 6,7,8 It was shown that 39.9% of facilities in construction were caused by falls from height, 8.4% were struck by objects on site, 1.4% were caught in by incidents, and 8.5% were electrocution. Incidences of such has occurred over the years in some other places of Tamil Nadu, like in Thiruvallur July 6, 2014, 11 story- building under construction collapsed and killed about 11 workers, were so many sustained severe injuries. In Chennai 2013, Times of India reported on June 28, of a multistory- building which was under construction at moulivakkam near porur, collapsed killing above 55 workers on the sport and lots more were injured.2,21 During the researcher’s postings in the emergency department of Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, he found out that not less than 25 number of cases which are accidents, occurring in construction sites were admitted on monthly basis. After the researchers exposure to these awareness, he thought that these accidents occur due to lack of safety gear, unlivable accommodation, lack of rudimentary education on the construction site safety protocol, hence he recommended: safety organization and management, understanding of the site layout, good and strict utilization of safety gears and policy, proper training and education, adequate lighting, personal protective gadgets, first aids, insurance and welfare facilities.2,6 8
