All our relationships in this world are determined by how we relate to people. We can’t fulfill all our needs ourselves. Relating to and seeking help from other people requires communication. Do you want to see what insufficient communication can do? Well, grab a ticket, hop on a plane and fly to a destination whose language you don’t have a clue about. Expressing every little detail will become a herculean task. You will have trouble finding even necessary things like food and shelter. Communication is the ability to collaborate, shares idea with and relate to the world around you. It makes transferring ideas less challenging. The real superpower of a human is the ability to socialize, express opinions and collaborate. This is precisely what led to the creation of aircraft, automobiles, highways and electrical systems. The ability to collaborate, contribute and express ideas. Be honest, when you meet a person for the first time, how do you form an impression about them without knowing them immediately? Through their appearance and the manner in which they communicate with you, you can form an impression of them. Similarly, you can use effective communication to sweep people off their feet in the first meeting itself, while influencing them to do what you want. Without the process of communication or the ability to communicate, we would be limited by our brain’s ability to perform tasks or share ideas. The world is about ideas and selling your ideas impressively to other people, and effective communication makes that possible. You can help persuade and convince people by creating a stellar impression. How do you think salespersons who you don’t even know can sell you things which you don’t even need? The answer is simple—the power of communication! Advice on How to Use the Information in This Book, or Any Book for that Matter Knowledge is valuable only when put into action. Otherwise, it doesn’t serve any purpose. What is the best way to gain information fast in the shortest period of time? Do you merely read books or do you use books? Power is the ability to take action. If the books you read give you the ability to act, that’s real power. Information is facts, data, numbers, statistics, principles, and theories. There’s plenty of information everywhere on the internet. When you have plenty of information, it becomes knowledge. Knowledge is accumulated over a period of time. Textbooks are a source of information. You read many books, give tests to assess your understanding, and then wonder why everything in your life is the same. Think about this—maybe you haven’t converted information into knowledge, and knowledge into experience. Experience allows you to test the knowledge you’ve acquired. Making mistakes will enable you to figure out whether you’ve learned the right knowledge. You are observing a pattern of what works and what doesn’t. Don’t just read books is all I want to tell you. Use books. Every person’s wisdom is different, it comes from their own experiences. My wisdom may not be the same as yours. Go beyond watching videos and reading books to actually take back information and implement it. Apply information shared in this and other books to know what works for you and what doesn’t. You can’t learn to swim by reading about how to swim. While reading or listening through this book, take away the three most significant and actionable ideas, lessons or techniques that you can implement right away! Chapter 1: 13 Power Packed Tips to Enhance Your Public Speaking Skills and Communicate Effectively One of the most significant indicators of a powerful communicator is someone who can engagingly put across their point when addressing an audience. Whether you are giving a presentation to a boardroom full of people or talking to a broad audience from a podium, some valuable pointers can help you communicate more effectively when it comes to driving home important points. Are you able to persuade and convince people of your idea? Are you able to express yourself compellingly on a public platform? Are you able to communicate with a group of people without any space for misunderstanding? Here are 15 power packed tips to transform into a highly effective and articulate public speaker. 1. Grab Attention with a Powerful Beginning and End This doesn’t go on to say everything in between should be mediocre. It just means your beginning should be powerful enough to get your audience hooked and listening intently to the rest of the speech. Don’t begin with some nondescript and uninspiring like “Today I am going to talk about so and so.” It is plain, insipid and boring, and doesn’t encourage your audience to listen any further. Instead, begin with a shocking or unexpected statistic, an incredible statement, an interesting anecdote or a powerful quotation. The idea is to induce shock and interest to grab your audience’s attention. Don’t make it unnecessarily scandalous though, just include an element of surprise. Similarly, while concluding the speech, offer a summary of all the important points made during the speech to reinforce what you’ve said, eliminating any misunderstandings. Also, close with a powerful statement or quotation that your audience is likely to remember for long. Make it unique and memorable! 2. Work with a Script but Don’t Read Looking at It I always recommend creating a rough skeleton of what you plan to say in the speech. It can include important points you wish to address or quotations/anecdotes you want to use during the speech. We are human, and there is a tendency to forget things. Work with a rough script or draft and keep building upon it as you speak. This will invariably come when you go with the flow of the speech and gauge audience reaction. However, don’t ever read from a script. Use it only as a prompt. One of the most powerful ways of connecting with your audience involves looking them in the eye and speaking. You will come across as more credible and drive home the point more effectively. If you need to look into the paper for clues, simply glance at it and then convey it to your audience by looking them in the eye. Never ever read verbatim from your notes. It makes you come across as a highly ineffective communicator. By maintaining eye contact with your audience, you focus on the message. Create a brief and rough outline to keep on track with the speech but always communicate by maintaining eye contact with your audience. The speakers who read directly from a script make themselves appear highly ineffectual. There is no eye contact, and as a speaker, you don’t come across as passionate in the points you are making. You won’t light up your audience or lead them to action. It goes without saying that you need a powerful opening and closing
