Title of ~hesis/~issertation: THE EFFECT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION I1 ON STUDENTS' ATTITUDE TOWAM PHYSICAL EDUCATION *I Author: (signature ) Ri? A. m R S (name') (date) ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study was to determine whether com- pletion of the final compulsory physical education course in British Columbia's public school system, Physical Education 11, has any effect on students' attitude toward. physical education. Specific questi~ns addressed in the study were: 1. What immediate effect has Physical Education 11 on students' attitude toward physical education? 2. What are the longer-term effects on attitude toward "; . physical education of those students who have complete$ Physical Education ll? 3 Is there a significant difference in attitude toward P >, physlcal education amonq %ry grades? 4. Is thcre a significant differencetin attitude toward . physical education between male and female secondary students? 5. Do certain specific factors, namely: family physical education environmcnt, school physical education environment, community physical education environment, and selE concept pertaininq to physical education, relate to a student's attitude toward physical education? 6. Is there any difference amonq the two grade eleven and two grade ten qroups in their response to the four factors previously mentioned? 7. Is there a significant difference between males and females within a group established for this study in their response to the four factors previously mentioned? Four hundred and twenty-two students in grades eight to eleven from three secondary schools in School District #22, Vernon, constikuted the sample for this study. The students were randomly selected on the basis of sex, grade, and school. This selection procedure resulted in /' the following group,s: 2 1. Grade eleven experimental group: this qroup had nearly completed Physical Education 11. 2. ?Grade eleven control group: this group had elected not 4 to take Physic 1 Education 11 until grade twelve, 3. Grade ten control group A:, this group had ~lectedt o take Physical Education 11 when they reached grade eleven. 4. Grade ten control group B: this group had elected to take Physical Education 11 when they reached grade twelve. 5. Grade nine qroup. 6. Grade eight group. A Likert scale entitled "bkar's Physical Education Attitude Scale" was iu used to determine the students' attitude toward physical education. Another Likert scale was developed by the researcher during.the course of the study to examine the relationship between attitude toward physical education and the four factors mentioned earlier. These questionnaires were administered to the selected students at one hour sessions in their schools. Three testing sessions were held. 4 I Based on the data collected the following conclusions seem appropriate for students in Vernon and similar students elsewhere: 1. The students' attitude toward physical education after the completion of their last compulsory physical education course was positive, 2. There was a significant difference in attitude toward physical education between those students who have completed Physical *Education 11 and those in the secondary school grades who had not corn; pleted Physical Education 11. . 3. Other than those grade eleven students who had7 completed 6 Physical Education 11, there was no significant difference between any two groups of secondary students in their attitude toward physical education. c-' \ 4. There w&s no significant difference in attitude toward physical education betw&w-boys and girls at the secondary school level. % . 5. The positive effect of Physical Education 11 on a student's attitude toward physical education was not of a transient nature. Students maintained a highly positive attitude towhrd physical education eight months after the initial administration of the scale. 6- The school physical education environment, the family physical education environment, and self concept pertaining to physical education were moderately and positively related to attitud.e toward physical education. 7. The community physical education environment factor was 0 only slightly related to attitude toward physical education. 8. It would appear that the school physical education envi- ronment was the reason for the more positive attitude toward physical education displayed by those grade eleven students who had taken Physical Education 11 as compared to those secondary school students who had not taken Physical Education 11. 9. There wa's norsignificant difference'between male and femgle mean scores for the factors: family physical education environ- - ment, school physical education environment, community physical educa- tion environment, and self concept pertaining to physical 'education.
