1639.75 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS-URBAN A 9 of Illinois R. Blagojevich, Governor c.3 3 0112 121925678 Department of Commerce and buunuiiiiu uppunurmy Jack Lavin, Director ILLINOIS DOCIJMFN MAY 0 6 2008 How do you compost a vermi? What is a vermi, anyway? Vermi is the Latin word for “worm.” (See, you’ve learned something already!) The traveling Vermi-Case brings you everything but the worms! Vermicomposting is an activity that can be enjoyed by students from kindergarten to college. The Vermi-Case includes all the preparatory information needed to set up a worm bin: books, videos, web sites, worm and worm bin resources. Why would you want worms in your classroom or home? Here are five good reasons: By taking care of a worm bin, students learn respect and responsibility for living creatures. Worms are easy to take care of; no one has to watch them while you are gone, they make no noise, and they don’t hop around the classroom or your home. They are excellent “source reduction machines.” Worms will eat leftover snacks and lunches. O They produce castings, which are the world’s most nutrient-rich soil. O Teaching about worms can meet all five Illinois Learning Standards goals. Mailing/Shipping Procedure Please request the case at least two weeks prior to the date needed to ensure availability.
