The directory provides information on the State Board of Education, the state education department, a number of educational associations, individual school systems and all public elementary and secondary schools in the state. I appreciate the valuable assistance from school superintendents and others who supplied the information for the directory, and I hope it will be helpful to you. ^-Michael E. All school systems and schools have code numbers. A list of code numbers for school systems is on page 230. . - A handy reference guide to school system phone numbers is located on the inside front cover. School system code numbers are also included. If you know the name of a school but do not know its location, see page 232, the Alphabetical Index of Public Schools. This index includes the code number and telephone number of all public schools in this state. The first three digits of the code number indicate the school system. For example, 110-304 A C REYNOLDS HIGH 704-298-2500 — To find the school system for the 110 code, refer to the code list on page 230. This is the code for Buncombe County. To find the principal's name and other information about this school, turn to the listing for Buncombe County and look for this code in the list of schools. Local board of education attorneys are listed under the names of the board members in the Alphabetical List of School Units by Counties. Their addresses are included, but call the central office of the school system for phone numbers. If you need the address of a private or home school, see the listing for the Office of Non-Public Schools in the Special Schools' section, page 253. ^ .. State Board of Education Membership The State Board of Education consists of the Lieutenant Governor, the Treasurer and eleven members appointed by the Governor for eight-year, overlapping terms, subject to confirmation by the General Assembly. Eight of the appointed members of the Board represent the eight education districts of the State. These districts are drawn by the General Assembly. The Governor also appoints two high school students as advisors to the State Board of Education. A high school junior is appointed each year for a two-year term. The N.C. Teacher of the Year also serves a two-year overlapping term as an advisor to the State Board of Education. NORTH CAROLINA EDUCATION DISTRICTS cr ■t.J:"' i5>
