In the same period, learning and education penetrated deeply into society; they fulfilled a steadily growing number of functions, enhancing the competence of officials and contributing to the accumulation of intellectual and symbolic capital by both individuals and groups. A third major development was the change of discourse which was brought about by the advent of humanism in both Latin and vernacular culture.
