Economic Indicators of the Farm Sector: Production and Efficiency Statistics, 1989. Resources and Technology Division, Economic Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. ECIFS 9-4. Abstract Recovering from the 1988 drought, farm output rose 11.8 percent in 1989 and input use increased 2.1 percent, raising agricultural productivity by 9.4 percent and producing a record high index of 128.4. Crop production increased 16.6 percent, and livestock production rose 0.3 percent. Historic high indexes were achieved for labor productivity (148) and livestock production per breeding unit (131). Harvested crop acreage increased 6.7 percent, mainly due to reductions in the acres idled under Federal programs. Farm machinery expenditures rose 23 percent, continuing an upward trend that began in 1987. Keywords: Farm output, farm inputs, labor, productivity. Note The Economic Research Service introduces a new productivity time series in this report. Tornqvist indexes of output, input, and productivity are presented on a national level in addition to the Laspeyres national and regional indexes previously published. National and regional Laspeyres indexes will continue to be published until regional Tornqvist indexes have been developed. A special article at the end of this report explains the new series. April 1991 Washington, DC 20005-4788 Preface This report is one of five in the Economic Indicators of the Farm Sector series. Other reports are Costs of Production-Livestock and Dairy, Costs of Production- Major Field Crops, National Financial Summary, and State Financial Summary. Included are major time series which reflect changes in farm production, production inputs, and production efficiency. We present national and, in most cases, regional time series data. The text highlights changes since the previous year or specified time period. We usually revise data only for the year preceding the year in the title, but some tables reflect changes over several years. This annual publication was prepared under the general direction of James H. Hauver. Principal contributors and information sources are: Farm output—James H.
