Introduction and Chapter One
When Troy was Taken

San Diego, California, USA – September 2021

Ten, nine, eight…
“You are waking up.”
Seven, six, five…
“You can feel your whole body.”
Four, three, two…
“You are lying on the couch, feeling rested…”
One…
“Open your eyes. You feel wide awake and refreshed.”
I do feel awake and refreshed, although strangely heavy and rather hungry.
The light dazzles me as I open my eyes and I have to blink to refocus. It’s a
vulnerable feeling being the one who is dazed and lying down while the other
person is seated, all calm and collected. I hear the scratch of notes being
made as I sit myself up and allow my senses to return to the present moment.
My work is in paleocontact, the theory that in the deep past our ancestors had
contact with ET civilizations. It feels like I have taken my life in my hands by
engaging publicly with a topic that most people find stretching, to say the
least. But what happened just now has raised the stakes even higher. My
initiation into the realm of ET contact began unexpectedly while I was deeply
immersed in the world of Christian ministry. I was working as a church
doctor and theological educator, teaching congregations and training pastors
in elements of Bible translation and the interpretation of ancient texts. I was
in my groove. I loved my work and enjoyed operating in a field where I had
built up a body of skills and expertise. Yet that whole world of confidence
and security was about to change. While drilling down into various
translation anomalies in the book of Genesis, I was arrested by the data
surrounding the root meanings of various key words in the ancient texts. To
my great surprise I found that this unfamiliar data was leading me, gradually,
inexorably, towards a conclusion that many of the Bible’s familiar stories of
beginnings, long interpreted as God-stories, are in all probability something
far different to that. Where the data led, I had to follow. After months locked
down in my shipping crate study, immersed in a sea of ancient sources, I
realized I had entered a secret world of contact and close encounters, hidden
in plain sight in the Bible’s stories of beginnings. As I compared the Bible’s
accounts against other world mythology and ancestral narratives, the picture
only grew sharper. Our ancestors’ origins stories are full of paleocontact.
This personal paradigm shift has been rapid and has brought with it profound
implications for my life and work. I think it would be fair to say that the
world in which I have awoken is rather different to the one I fell asleep in.
However, as I now draw some deep breaths, massage my temples and sit
myself up on the couch in Barbara Lamb’s office, I can tell you for sure that
it is one thing to find aliens in ancient stories and something else entirely to
bump into them in your own life.
I am under no illusion as to how difficult most people find it to take the
subject of ET contact seriously, and I certainly have no ambition to be the
next Whitley Strieber. If you are not familiar with Whitley Strieber, he was
for a long time the poster-boy for close encounters of the traumatic kind.
Larry King, on his iconic talk show, famously laughed at Whitley’s personal
account of being examined and probed by other-worldly visitors. Whitley had
to wait for a long time before the world was willing to give him a respectful
hearing. His infamous close encounter took place in 1985, the very same year
from which I have just returned. However, I should tell you straight up, I do
not have a graphic experience like Whitley’s to share with you. Like the great
majority of experiencers around the world, my own experience is of things I
cannot explain. The memory I have just revisited in my session with Barbara
Lamb is of the first few moments of an encounter and then nothing more. No
punchline. No examination. No anal probe. And yet the impact of everything
I am about to share with you has forced me to wrestle with the same question
Whitley confronted forty years ago: “How do you go back to life as normal
when your whole world has just changed?”
