The myriad studies that have been done over the years give the distinct impression of constriction, a crippling, a sense of being somehow not quite as good, not quite as bright, not quite as valuable as men …. Certainly there are many women who have escaped that blight, who have lived full and happy lives, but when you leaf through the studies you can sense, floating in the air, ghosts of unborn dreams, unrealized hopes, undiscovered talents. The tragedies are the “might have beens” and they are the most poignant. — Carl Rivers, Rosalind Barnett, and Grace Baruch in Beyond Sugar and Spice Women with eating disorders have that feeling of “being not quite as good, not quite as bright, not quite as valuable” as others. Eating Disorders in Women and Children: Prevention, Stress Management, and Treatment is designed to teach professionals how to help women become all they can be and avoid the tragedy of “what might have been.” Even though eating disorders have most commonly been reported for women between the ages of 18 and 25, these disorders are not limited to one particular age category. Research indicates that fear of fatness, restrained eating, and binge eating are common among girls by age 10. In addition, reports of eating disorders are becom- ing more common in the elderly. Disordered eating is often an unhealthy attempt at coping with stress. Although young girls and women may use the eating disorder as a method of coping, they soon are caught in a negative cycle, increasingly using ineffective behaviors in an attempt to cope with stress. The eating disorder becomes more severe as stress levels, particularly interpersonal stress levels, increase. Eating Disorders in Women and Children: Prevention, Stress Management, and Treatment is specifically designed to teach professionals how to help young girls and women target the interpersonal stress that contributes to disordered eating. It develops a broader understanding of eating disorder etiology and provides an application of the knowledge for practitioners to use in their particular work settings, whether in phys- ical education classes, health classes, or support groups for athletes. This book is writ- ten for the practitioner; it is the only book on the market that covers stress management techniques specifically for eating disorder symptomatology. Each chapter of the text is organized under the following main headings: (a) learning objectives, (b) research background, and (c) application of research question. Actual case studies are presented when deemed appropriate. This organization allows the reader to understand how the information can be applied. Throughout each chapter, the reader will be referred to supplemental material included in the appendices. Each chapter refers to supplemental materials included in the appendices. The materials are intended to help victims of eating disorders increase personal introspec- tion and decrease interpersonal stress. Young girls and women with eating disorders often have trouble expressing their feelings. Varied teaching tools such as movement improvisation exercises (body movements often express the essential self more deeply than words) are included in the appendix for the practitioner to use in his or her particular work setting. The appendix also includes cognitive paper and pencil exercises to help young girls and women increase personal introspection. Eating Disorders in Women and Children: Prevention, Stress Management, and Treatment is a resource tool for professionals who are exposed to women who exhibit symptoms of disordered eating and for anyone who is experiencing the stress of an eating disor- der, personally or in a friend or loved one. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of this treatment approach, varied professionals will gain the expertise to implement the knowledge contained in this text. Examples of professionals who may find this text useful are university personnel responsible for the preparation of teachers, health edu- cators, fitness professionals and coaches; allied health professionals including thera- peutic recreation specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and nurses; the counseling profession, sociologists, educational psychologists, social workers, and clinical psychologists; individuals in the field of human development and family studies; and teachers, health educators, fitness professionals, and coaches in the school or community setting. Editor Jacalyn J. Robert-McComb, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Health at Texas Tech University Physical Education and Recreation. She also serves as adjunct professor in the Department of Physiology at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center and is the director of the Texas Tech Center for Sports Health and Human Performance. Dr. Robert-McComb has been certified by ACSM as an Exercise Test Technologist and Exercise Specialist, as well as by the American Council of Exercise as an Aerobics Instructor. She was an intercollegiate athlete in gymnastics at Southeast Missouri State University and a professional water-skier at Cypress Gardens, Florida. Dr. Robert-McComb understands the demands and stress associ- ated with a sports culture that emphasizes maintaining a certain ideal body weight and shape for optimal performance. She is dedicated to educating young girls, coaches, teachers, and health care professionals about the importance of accepting oneself through nurturing activities and the management of stress in one’s life.
