When I first chose the convention theme of Transitions, I did so because the theme spoke to me personally and professionally. And when I thought of the world around us--politically, environmentally, economically--all I could see were transitions. What better way to work towards an understanding of life’s important moments than to embrace them and examine them? That is what I wish for you with this year’s convention, the opportunity to ponder how our discipline contributes to the dialogue of Transitions at home and across the globe. Who better than communication scholars and professionals to explore the processes and consequences of communication as they apply to human life and relationships? Your colleagues have created an amazing set of programs for you this year. There are close to two hundred programs to choose from, over eight hundred presenters, twenty-seven graduate and undergraduate posters, twelve short courses, and an array of business meetings, coffee hours, and receptions from which you can benefit. I encourage you to take full advantage of all that is here for you! Working with the twenty-four interest group planners has been an absolute pleasure. They were creative, organized, and always professional, many going above and beyond their roles to help with the overall planning. For all that they did in the creation of this convention, I am most grateful. President Cindy Lont was never more than an email away with incredible encouragement, information, and a generous willingness to share invaluable experience and insights. Executive Director Ron Arnett, Past-President Janie Fritz, and Rita McCaffrey, Doug Marshall, and David DeIuliis from Duquesne University were all immensely supportive and helpful. Kathie Cesa is the quintes- sential professional. I don’t think there was ever a time when I emailed her and didn’t get a helpful response within minutes, setting my mind at ease and giving me whatever information was needed on the spot. When choosing my team, I considered the balance that I needed to get the work done as well as to keep me sane. I chose my Second Vice Presidents, Tobi Mackler and Rita Rosenthal, for their steadfast dedication. As we headed closer and closer to the convention, their work load increased, but their humor never left them. Susan Ward compiled a roster of compelling short courses, and in an effort to give attendees complete advanced information, introduced the “short course syllabus” to rave reviews. Trevor Parry-Giles put together two wonderful sets of graduate poster sessions that I know you will enjoy. Leeanne Bell McManus’ marketing work was, once again, amazing. In these tough economic times, she managed to creatively and successfully garner extensive financial support. Anne Mattina remains my favorite foodie. Her compilation of restaurant listings and the wonderful selection of food at our receptions are sure to provide something for everyone! This year, we present the second Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference. Susan Jasko’s organization of the review process was most appreciated. Bonnie Jefferson wins the MVP award for this year’s con- vention, for her invaluable work as an additional organizer for the USC. I can’t imagine how we would have succeeded in putting together such a wonderful conference for our students without her. You will note those student panels on Friday and Saturday in your program, and I encourage you to attend as many as you can. Let’s remember to do all we can to encourage and support the future scholars of our discipline. My colleagues at Cape Cod Community College have been amazing. Their moral and physical support have served as an invaluable reminder of the “family” that I belong to here at CCCC. And, I cannot forget my extended family, those friends far and wide who pitched in and helped just because I asked! And finally, I give my sincere thanks to the students from Cape Cod Community College, Suffolk University, and Regis College for all of their efforts on behalf of this 103rd ECA convention. Don’t forget to take a moment to meet and thank them when you see them around the hotel. They have made this process so very rewarding. On behalf of the entire planning team, let me thank you for your participation in this year’s convention and extend my warmest wishes for a wonderfully productive, energizing, and transforming convention! Willets First Vice President April 2012 6 103rd Annual Convention: Transitions Welcome 7 Welcome Eastern Communication Association 8 103rd Annual Convention: Transitions Welcome 9 Information Eastern Communication Association CONVENTION POLICY STATEMENTS The Royal Sonesta is a non-smoking hotel, and hotel staff will enforce this policy diligently. ECA makes all reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. Although the pre-registration form inquired about accommodations needs, anyone who requires assistance should notify First Vice-President Nancy Willets as soon as possible. As an Association, we have a history of making our convention experience a safe and convenient one for all participants. By registering for the 2012 ECA Convention, participants agree that they are responsible for providing their own insurance. They assume responsibility for their own risks in participation and thereby hold harmless ECA, its Executive Council, and other sponsors of this event. ECA TECHNOLOGY POLICY(Approved 4/29/07) All requests for technology must be made by the Interest Group Program Planner at the time of final program submission (normally, this is around mid-November). Any requests made after that time will not be honored. Upon receiving those requests, the Convention Planner will review the importance and necessity of the requests, examining the individual submission and its purpose. Those programs ranked highest by the program planner that incorporate technology will be given priority. Those with lower ranking will likely not allow technology to be included in the program. ECA will not approve requests for the following technology: WiFi, personal computers, laser printers, satellite links, teleconference equipment, LCD panels, video data projects, and digital versatile/video disc equipment. Although ECA members may wish to rent this equipment from the hotel at their own expense, those individuals are responsible for the equipment, including protecting it from damage and theft. Further, ECA is not responsible for this equipment. Finally, the hotel should not be expected to provide service for, or assistance with, personal technology that is brought into the hotel. 10
