Sharon was a co- worker, good friend, and wonderful colleague. We worked together for many years and she had a great love of the study of the early life history of fishes. Though she possessed no advanced degrees, she took several graduate level courses and did well in them, and she was a keen researcher who learned quickly. As a result she published many papers with me and others, as well as solely authored papers, two of which are chapters in this book. She continued working nearly to the end of her life on her chaetodontid chapter and almost had it completely finished. Despite being stricken with devastating cancer, she always had a cheerful outlook on life and was an inspiration to all of us. We all regarded her as “the sunshine of the laboratory” and memories of her will always be fond ones. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I owe a deep debt of gratitude to a large number of colleagues who took the time to write chapters for this book and help in many other ways. For special recognition I thank the following: Larry Massey was of invaluable assistance in formatting all the chapters for the web and printed version; Jack Javech has been our laboratory’s illustrator for many years and made the bulk of the original illustrations, my immediate staff came through in the many hectic months at the end – John Lamkin, Monica Lara, Dave Jones, Tom Jackson, Luciane Marcus, Samantha Whitcraft, Sarah Frias-Torres by completing their own chapters, picking up on some others, and support in general. Student interns Jose Morillo, Jennifer Hodge and Yesim Dodanli assisted in scanning hundreds of images. The whole project got much of its start in 1992 while I was on a Rockefeller Foundation Scholar-in-Residence Fellowship at the Bellagio Study and Conference Center, Bellagio, Italy. Over the intervening years many people helped me in innumerable ways. My dear friend and colleague Geoff Moser gave me a tremendous amount of advice and help from his own vast archives of knowledge and publications. This was supplemented with similar help from dear friends and colleagues Joanne Lyczkowski-Shultz, Allyn Powell, Jim Ditty, Bruce Collette, Mike Fahay, Dick Robins, Nigel Merrett, Karsten Hartel, Kunio Amaoka, Dave Johnson, Carole Baldwin, Tom Potthoff, Lulu Vasquez-Yeomans, Wayne Laroche, Mark Leiby, Bill Smith-Vaniz, Ted Pietsch, Shoji Ueyanagi, Jean Dunn, Bill Watson, Marcia Castro, Tasha Davis, Talat Farooqi, Rick Shaw, Walter Matsumoto, Witek Klawe, Joan Holt, Art Kendall, Ann Matarese, Ted Pietsch, Dave Ruple, Bruce Comyns, Claire Paris, Eddie Matheson, and the late Don de Sylva. CRC Press staff were very helpful especially John Sulzycki, Jim McGovern and two unnamed proof readers. The following graciously gave permission to use copyrighted illustrations that were in their care: Su Sponaugle for the Bulletin of Marine Science, Jorgen Nielsen for Dana Reports, Mo Donnelly for ASIH publications, and Karsten Hartel for MCZ publications. I thank my supervisors, Bill Fox, Brad Brown, Nancy Thompson, and Jim Bohnsack for their support. Most of all I thank my wife of 46 years, Carol, for putting up with me, encouraging me, and supporting me. Authors of the various chapters wish to thank the following (many of whom are authors themselves): Mark Leiby, Kim Williams, Joe Nelson, Dave Johnson, Phil Heemstra, George Dennis, Bill Smith-Vaniz, L.
