Somenewcollectors will becomedisenchanted, but hopefullyfornot toolongorpermanentlyas this experienceis all part ofthelearningcurvethat goes withtheseries (oranyotherU.S.series forthat matter). What is theaverage collectortodo? Onehas tohavesomereliablesource forpricingfor making intelligent purchases, or buyingandsellinginthe current marketplace! Unless you'vecollectedtheSeatedseries for alongtimeandreallyhavea goodsenseforhowtough certaindates/mints aretolocateat certain gradelevels, youmaynot haveaccumulatedtheknowledge for truevaluationinthemarket. I'vebeenhearingforaverylongtimehowfarofftheCoinDealer Newsletter canbeto realitythese days, andnot just for LibertySeated, but forother U.S.series as well. Bust andBarbers can also bejust as faroffthemark as topricing. Certainly,it's timeforanewcutting-edgepricingguidefordealers and collectors that is trulyin touchwiththemarket, andhas enoughcapablefull-timeAnalysts researchingthemarket. How about a new guidethat also covers pricingon all themajor varieties (not justRedbooklisted),diemarriages, anddie states forall themajorU.S.series anddenominations wherethesediecharacteristics havebeenidentified? From Stephen Petty (on last month’s editorial oncoinpricingbyJason Feldman): I’m onthecollector sideversus dealerside…. Intheseateddollararea, Ihave yet tobuya coinat Greysheetprices andoftenmust purchaseabove PCGS retail if Iwant the coin. Certainly, Iwould always liketohavepurchasedthem at alowerprice, but problem-freecoins arein highdemand andalmost neverfound atGreysheet unless theselleris unawareof theirvalue. Forexample,werecentlypurchasedthe1873-CC Stacks seateddollar(AU-55)andpaidessen- tiallydoubleretail. Weknewofat least twoother buyers that wouldhavepaidthis priceshouldwe have passed; onehas todeterminethevalueofa coin anddetermineifthepriceis acceptable–I’veneverseen seateddollars sell atGreysheet prices inmypurchaseofdozens ofmidtohigh gradeproblem-freeseated dollars. Perhaps mid-gradecoins canbepurchasedforretail orslightlyless, but ifboththedealerandcol- lectorareknowledgeable, thepricewill bewell abovegraysheet prices. Moreover, Ihaven’t seen a prob- lem freemidtohigh-gradeseateddollar,50c,quarterordimecoins worthpurchasingat local shows in Ohioina yearormore; theywerecommon10 years ago. Thematerial has driedupandwhen foundsells almost immediately; muchofthematerial sells in privatetransactions viadealerlists. Just abuyer’s point ofview…. From Dale Miller(onlast month’s editorial oncoinpricingbyJason Feldman): Respondingtothe article about pricingofcoins, Iusetheactual salepriceat Heritageauctions as the best indicatorofvalue, more thananyprice guide. Notealso: auctionestimates are also notoriouslylow. IbidonaConstellatioonGoldberg's last auc- tion. It was listedat $300andup,but basedonHeritagepricing, Ibid$700. It still wasn't enough, but I appeartohavebeenclose. From Charles Sullivan(onlast month’s editorial oncoinpricingbyJason Feldman): Jason, youhavethe framedtheissueincorrectly. It is not a"pricing"issue, but rather a"valuation"one. The"pricers" aredoinganexcellent jobofmakingamarket forcirculated LibertySeatedcoinage. (Continuedonpage10) Page10 The E-Gobrecht Subscriber Correspondence Continued (Continuedfrompage9) Dealers suchas RichUhrich, LarryBriggs, Dick Osburn,BrianGreer,JackBeymer,JackMiller, andothers rarelyoverpayfor,orunder-price, LibertySeated coinage. If RichUhrichis willingtopay$670+foran XF401884half, Isuspect heis prettyconfident he canfinda readybuyerwhois willingtotakehim out at $800,$900,orwhatever profit hewants tomakeonthecoin. Thefolks whoknow "values"but not "prices"happentoinhabit thepublishingfield. Whypickon solelytheGreysheet? Compilers ofvalues forCoin World andNumismaticNews all fall intothesametrap forrelyingonstaticvaluations from generalist coindealers. Thesepublishers aretoo lazy(orunder-funded)to hireresearchinterns and insteadrelyon general- ist dealers fordata. Inturn, thesedealers don't want tolearntheintricacies ofseries that spannedseven decades, don't havethetimetospendresearchingcoins that don't turnover frequently, don't changetheir bids forcoins theydon't sell anyway, don't particularlyfeel comfortable withcoins that arenot bright and shinyordon't resideinPCGS slabs, anddon't caretolearnabout overdates andrepunchedmintmarks. Thepublishers of "valuation"datadon't changetheirmethodologies becausetheyreceive few,if any complaints, from collectors whocan't findthat XF1884halffor$335plus dealerprofit margin. Therealityis that althoughthe "price"for anXF401864-P dimemaydiffersubstantiallyfrom the priceof aMS641921Peacedollar,their "valuations"maybeidentical. Themainstream numismaticpress reallydoes not care about thedistinction. From Bill Oldenburg(ontheideaofa LSCC anniversarymedal): Ithinkit is agreat idea andfullysup- port theprogram.
