In August2006, AmericanNumismaticRaritiespresentedthefirstsubstantialofferingofde-accessioned archival materialfromtheAmericanBankNoteCompany. This consisted primarilyof platesanddies usedforcurrency,stockcertificatesandotherpaperitems,awonderful selectionof19thcenturyvignettes andimagery. Recently, H.R.Harmerpresented a similarofferingofAmericanBankNoteCompanymaterialincludingacoupleof ChristianGobrechtrelated items,whichare, picturedhere (lot2036intheHarmersaleof 1/31/2007). Theimage(ontheright)oftheAlexander Imedal isthemoreinterestingofthe twopieces. Thecaption reads"ChristianGobrechtInventor/Executed1817". The TheE-GobrechtVolume3,Issue3 5 captionsrefers nottothemedalitself,butratherto theprocessofconvertingthethree dimensionalmedaltoatwo-dimensionalimagesuitableforprinting. Knownasa"medal rulingmachine," Gobrechtconstructedsucha contraptionaround1817,andseveral othersarethoughttohaveindependentlycreatedsimilardevices(notsurprisingly,much litigationlaterensued). Thesecondimage(ontheleft)isthatofan award medalfromtheMassachusetts CharitableMechanicsAssociation,JulianAM-33, engravedbyChristianGobrechtin 1837. Theexistenceofthesetwoimages,hereon paper,suggeststhatthe American Bank NoteCompanyhad engravingplates manufacturedwiththeseidenticalimages. Perhapswewillbeseeingtheactualplates atafutureauction.
