Hewas notonlyextremelyinfluentialforgenerationsofeconomicsandbusinessstudentsat theUniversityofGraz,buthehasservedasavisitingprofessorattheUniversityof NaturalResourcesandLifeSciences,Vienna,Austria,andattheUniversityofCluj, Romania, for many years. His dedication to teaching is also demonstrated in his textbooksoninternationalmacroeconomicsandonresourceeconomics(Farmerand Bednar-Friedl, 2010;Farmer and Schelnast, 2013;Farmer and Vlk, 2011;Farmer andWendner,1999). Karl is at home in general equilibrium theory, particularly in intertemporal applications.Hehasusedthistoolinmanystudiesontopicsinoneofthethreefields inthevolume.Inrecentyears,hehasbeenparticularlyconcernedwithdebtlimits inopeneconomies.ThecrisisattheEuropeanperipherymotivatedandaffectedhis researchin manyrespects. We are thereforesurethatthe first partin the booknot onlymeetshisresearchinterestbutalsorefreshesandintensifiesdiscussionsonthe Europeanintegrationprocess.Hecontinuouslywasalsointerestedinunderstanding the process of technological change and growth.
