BoUcoMoNT (1914) erected this genus for Phacosoma dytiscoidesBoUcoMoNT,1914.ARROW(1931)placeditbetweenthegeneraOnthopha- gusandParachoriusinthetribeCopriniofthesubfamilyCoprinae.PAuLIAN(1945) regardeditasamemberofthesubfamilyScarabaeinae.BALTHAsAR(1963)regardedit asamemberofthetribeCanthonini inthesubfamilyScarabaeinae. 0cHI,KoNand KIKuTA(l996,1997)placedit inthetribeCanthoniniofthesubfamilyScarabaeinae. TheyredescribedthetypespeciesofthegenusandproposedakeytoBorneanspecies. KABAKovandNAPoLov (1999)alsoplacedthisgenus inthetribeCanthoniniof the subfamilyScarabaeinae. GenusPhacosomaBoUcoMoNT,1914 PhacosomaBoUcoMoNT.1914.Annis.Soc.ent.Fr..83:249. Typespecies:PhacosomadytiscoidesBoucoMoNT,1914. Generalfeatur(cid:1)os. Bodybroadlyovalandratherdepressed.Headflat,broadlydi- latedatgenae(ocular lobes);clypeusnotseparated from frons, withapical margin bidentate in front. Antennae 9-segmented. Labrum broad, emarginate in front; mandibleslongandnarrow;maxillalong,witharatherbroadouterlobe;mentumnar- emarginate in front; labial palpusrathernarrow,with3rdsegment not very rowe minute. Pronotum short andbroad; lateral marginsangulatebefore themiddle, nearly straightandparallelposteriad,withshortinteriorcarinaesubpara11e1tolateralmargins nearbase;basegentlyrounded.Scutellumabsent. Elytra flat, withsixstriaeandverysharply in exedbroadepipleura, theouter edgerepresentingthe7thstriaacutelyrecurved. Prothoraxdeeplyhollowedinventralareasof frontangles;metasternumbroad betweennearlyparallelmesocoxae,separatedfrommesosternumbyanearlystraight DungBeetlesofThailand,4 131 line. Legsslender;protibiawiththreeexternalteethandminutelyserratebetweenand abovethem;meso-andmetatibiae1ongandnotmuchwidenedattheextremities;pro- tarsusshortandslender,meso- andmetatarsi long, rathernarrow, andnotmuchta- peredfrombasestotips,withbasalsegmentabouttwiceaslongas2nd,2nd,3rdand also4thequal inlength. Secondsexual featuresareoftenseeninmalelegs. Distribution. Oriental andEthiopianRegions. - 0rienta1Region: India, Sri Lanka,Myanmar,Thailand,Laos,MalayPeninsula,Borneo,Sulawesi. DistributionalrecordofthegenusPhacosoma fromThailandwasmadebyPAu- LIAN (Dec. 1987). He described 1) tristoldes thai and recorded R obscurum BoucoMoNT, 1920, both from Chiang Mal Province, North Thailand. Meanwhile, MAsuMoTo(Dec.1988) recorded1:) factumARROW,1931 fromNorthwestThailand. Later(June1989),hefoundoutthattheThaispeciesisnotidenticalwithtrueF)fac- tumandgaveitanewspecificname,Pfat11cilaetum.Inaddition,hedescribedanew species,1:)thailandicum, fromthesamearea. Notes. PAuLIAN (1945) regarded it as amember of thesubfamily Scarabaeinae.BAI_THAsAR(1963)regardeditasamemberofthetribeCanthonini in thesubfamilyScarabaeinae.KABAKovandNApoLov(1999)alsoplacedthisgenusin thetribeCanthoniniofthesubfamilyScarabaeinae. Bodycompactandconvex.Headshort,broadandflat,with- outcarinaeorelevations,obtuselyangulateatsides;clypeusrounded in front,with fourshort,sharp,slightlyrecurvedteeth.Antennae9-segmented.Pronotumuniformly convex, with sides rounded; front angles blunt, hind angles obsolete; base feebly rounded;ventralsideof frontangledeeplyhollowed.Scutellumabsent.Elytrawith sevenstriaeandnarrowepipleura. DungBeetleso(cid:4)Thailand,4 l35 Mandibles rather long. Maxillawith broad outer lobe. Mentum transversely quadrate,broadlybilobedin front,labialpalpuswith1stand2ndsegmentsshortand 3rdlong,notminute.Mesocoxaefarapartandparallel.Mesosternumnotveryshort, separatedbyanearlystraightlinefrommetasternum,whichisshortandbroad. Middleandhindlegsratherslender,thelatterlongerthantheformer;meso-and metafemoraveryslenderatthebases,thelatterwithposterioredgeangulateinmales ofsomespecies;protibiawiththreeexternalteeth,ofwhichtheapicaloneislocatedat theextremityanddirectedapico-ventradinsomespecies,e.g.,C nudus, CPenlnsu- 1aris and C goto1,minutelyserrateaboveandbetweenthem;meso-andmetatibiae narrow, gently curved, only slightly widened apicad; protarsi slender; meso- and metatarsi slightly compresse withsegmentsofequalwidth, basalsegmentsnotSo longas2nd. GenusParachoriusHAROLD,1873 Pa,achot-l1lsHAROLD,1873,Coleopt.Hefte,Miinchen,11:103. Typespecies:ParachoriusthomsoniHAROLD. General feature.s. Body oval and convex, almost glabrous. Head fiat, ocular lobesstronglydilated;genaeandclypeusnotsepartated from frons;clypeussharply notchedandbidentatein front. Antennae9-segmented.Pronotumstrongly convex; sjdesnotangulatebutrounded; frontandhindanglesdistinct,thelatterveryobtuse; basenearly straight inmiddle,notmargined; ventralsideof front anglehollowed. Scutellumabsent.Elytronwithsevenstriaeandanepipleura1carina. Mentumsubquadrate,slightlybilobedinfront;labialpalpuswiththreesegments nearlyequal inlength, twobasalsegmentsaswideaslong;meso-metasterna1suture straightorgentlycurved. Legsmedjum-sized;protibiawiththreeexternal teethandfinelyserrateabove them,meso-andmetatibiaeshortandregularlywidened frombasetoextremities but notgreatlywidenedattheextremities,eachwithout lateral ridge;protarsislender; meso_andmetatarsihardlytapered, feebly attened,with1stsegmentabout twiceas longas2nd,2nd,3rdand4thslightlydiminishing;clawsminute. Parachormslannathal'sp nov. (Figs7,14) ThisnewspeciessomewhatresemblesParacho1(cid:2)iusthomson1HAROLD,1873,but canbedistinguishedfromthelatterbythefollowingcharacteristics: Body ratherrectangular.Headmoreclearlypunctate;genaemoreproducedlat- eradand feeblyangulate.Pronotumnarrowerandmorestronglyconvexabove,more clearlybutalittlesparselypunctate; frontanglesrectangular,hindanglesobtuseand feeblysinuousbehindthecorners.Elytranarrower,somewhattrapezoidal:lateralmar- gins lessstrongly rounde posteriorparts feeblyswollenpostero-1ateradandapical partsrathersteeplyinclined(lateralmarginsevenlyroundedinRthomsoni);discobvi- ouslymoredeeplypunctate-striate, thepuncturesnotchingintervals; intervals feebly raised(flattenedin thomsoni),moreclearlyscatteredwithsmallpunctures. MalegenitaliaasshowninFig.14(lateralview),2.1mminlength.Maleprofe- murwithanterioredgebluntlytoothed(thetoothlesssharpthaninF)thomson1)alittle beforetheextremityandwidelybutweaklygougedinmiddle;metafemurwithposte- rioredgemoresharplytoothedatapical 1/3, andalsobluntly toothedat basal t/3 (sameasinPthomsoni);protibiawithventral facestrongly,verticallyprotrudentnear theextremityandtumidnearthebase,theprocessandprominencealmostofthesame shapeasinRthomson1.
