Along the way, it took the form of a journalism project at DCU, where the advice of my supervisor Dr Colum Kenny was most insightful. The ever-obliging Seamus Hosey helped me convert it into two tadio documentaries at RTE, produced by Lorelei Harris. An invitation from Skerries Historical Society to present a slide show on the Mahrs focused my mind upon writing a book on the subject. Once the book idea was under way, Michael Collins helped organise the necessary foreign trips; Regina Standun, Deirdre Cronnelly and Laura Wipfler were generous with their translating talents; Jonathan Williams showed dedication that went far beyond his role as literary agent; and Maurice Mullins’s proofreading of an early draft of the text was most helpful. The project would not have been possible but for the infectious enthusiasm of Dr Pat Wallace; the shared files and knowledge of Dr David O’Donoghue; the trust and generosity of the Mahr family; and the love and support of Jennifer Spurling, who showed confidence in the book by marrying me during its gestation. To the above, and the dozens of people who took my calls and answered my e-mails, I owe a debt of gratitude.
