To date we have detected 11 gases (CH., NzO, CO, CO. NO, H.0, NHs CzHa, COS , SO, and C2H:CH including isotopic signatures of carbon and oxygen at the ppm to the bo level using QCLs. This talk wil foous on the development of compact trace gas sensor platform technology based on QCLs and their application to sensitive, selective and quantitetve trace gas detection. Current application topics Include: atmospheric chemistry and environmental menitoring, turban and industrial emissions measurements, chemical analysis and industrial process control ‘and medical applications CLs possess the kay properties required for a mid-infrared spectroscopic sourve: (1) sufficient ‘optical pawer to ensure high signal-to-noise ratios, (2) narrow iinewidths and single frequency to ‘obtain high selectivity (3) mid-infrared wavelength coverage with type | and II QOLs (4) continuous ‘and broad wavelength tanebiity without mode hops, (© ) quasi-room temperatura operation (6) {good beam quafity and! (7} high reliability and compaciness. Until recently quasi-teom temperature ‘Speration of QCLs was enly possible for pulsed operation, but recently the frst thermoelectically- cooled. continuous weve (ew). michinfrared, single frequency QCL vas reported, which will greatly facilitate the use of QCLs in spectroscopic applications [4] Current exomplas of QCL applications being investigated by us include trace gas sensing in NASA pplcatione felovant fo spaceeram environmental monitoring and) advanced Ie support using quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy, high precision measurements of “coca, iotopic raf at 43 1m and noninvasive modieal diagnostics of various humeh diseases by tmeare of reat analis. In this presentation we will discuss the dependence of Jin on the doping level of a 4-quantum-welt design and compare 3 different active region designs (-quantumwell, 4-quantum-well, andl chirped superlattice design) in terms of Jp, bias voliage and optical power.
