When we accepted the editorship of this volume, we decided that the book should be divided into two parts, with Part I being devoted to the effects of food and of nutrient intake on the disposition of foreign compounds and Part II having to do with effects of drugs on nutrition. We made an early decision to choose as our authors those scientists whose research is currently in these fields. Our authors were asked to stress methodological issues and to provide critical subject matter reviews. They have complied fully. The book is intended for toxicologists who have the difficult task of interpreting serial or parallel studies of xenobiotics in experimental animals fed different diets. It is intended for oncologists who seek a better understanding of how nutrients affect chemical carcinogenesis. It is also aimed to meet the needs of nutritionists and clinical investiga- tors concerned with interpretation of aberrant effects of therapeutic drugs which may be explained by food effects on drug disposition or drug effects on nutritional status.
