Dr. Khan’s enduring strive for excellence has fetched him respect and recognition at national and international levels, and has transformed him into a well balanced professional, with a blend of unique scientific abilities, strong managerial skills, sound scholastic abilities and visionary leadership. Considering his vast scientific and administrative experience of over 40 years, the Government of Pakistan appointed Dr. H.A. Khan as Executive Director, Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS) in March 2000. COMSATS is an inter-governmental international organization, accredited with the UN system, with twenty-one (21) countries in three continents (Africa, Asia and Latin America) as its members. In this capacity Dr. Khan has played a key role in revitalizing the available scientific resources for the development of the countries of the South. From the COMSATS’ forum, he has been successful in promoting the cause for developing collaboration and synergies with international development and donor agencies. His dynamism has helped channelize the available scientific resources both in North and the South for optimizing and bringing about sustainable development. During his tenure at COMSATS as Executive Director, the Commission has observed strengthening of working relations with external partners and international players like UNIDO, IAEA, CERN and IDRC. His strong networking and leadership persona have made possible initiation and realization of some of the much needed programmes in collaboration with these organizations in the form of projects like; Industrial Information Network, Biotechnology Web-portal, Data-Grid Application and Information and Communication Technologies for Development in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. On the internal side, COMSATS as a whole has renewed its commitment with its network members and breakthroughs have been made to give breadth and depth to the network. Dr. Hameed Ahmed Khan has nearly 40 years of scientific and administrative experience to his credit at the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology (PINSTECH), Islamabad. In recognition of his devoted services and abilities, he was appointed as the Director General of PINSTECH; a position that designated him to head more than 1400 scientific and technical staff and about 2000 non-technical staff on payroll, which Dr. Khan successfully managed. He has played an important role not only in the establishment of world famed laboratories at PINSTECH (Islamabad), but also in helping many neighbouring and Third World countries to pursue the same. SSNTD, an abbreviation for Solid-State Nuclear Track Detection, first introduced by Dr. Khan and later establishment of SSNTD-Laboratories in PINSTECH and other institutions, is one of the achievements reflecting upon his scientific and administrative faculties. The scientists at PINSTECH, under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Hameed Ahmed Khan, have 2 worked on various developmental aspects, as well as on the applications of nuclear techniques in physical, chemical and material sciences. Dr. Hameed has actively participated in the basic R&D of various nuclear techniques and their applications. Dr. Hameed Khan directed his efforts towards producing some characteristic nuclear data of basic importance; making PINSTECH-Laboratories self sufficient, open to universities/colleges and research institutes in and across Pakistan, and applying these highly useful techniques in various projects of Pakistan. He has been a driving force for PINSTECH in initiating scientific collaboration with German, Chinese, Italian and other scientific institutes from various countries, and also within Pakistan. Dr. Khan is a scientist with international exposure, which has allowed him to present his scientific and technical work across the globe. He is a veteran of more than five hundred and thirty eight (538) research publications and has earned quite a name for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Muslim World. His papers have been quoted and discussed in well reputed international journals and magazines like, Time and Science News (USA); The Times, The Observer and The New Scientist, (U.K.); and Die Zei' (Germany). He presented his scientific work in a large number of international science conferences and at the universities and research institutes of Germany, France, Austria, U.K., Sweden, Egypt, Italy, People's Republic of China, Vietnam and Mexico. Dr. Khan’s services were not restricted to scientific work in laboratories and administrative responsibilities. He supervised more than 50 post-graduate and post-doctorate students, who benefited from his knowledge and expertise. He also has been on the panel of many Editorial Boards pertinent to his field of expertise, and being an authority in the field of solid state nuclear track detection, he has been refereeing technical research papers for many international scientific journals since 1972, and has been the Director of `International Spring School on the Development and Applications of Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors' (March 5-14, 1979, Islamabad), and `14th International Conference on Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors' (April 2-6, 1988, Lahore). He co-directed the Workshop on Radon Monitoring in Radioprotection, Environmental Radioactivity and Earth Sciences (April 3-14, 1989, Trieste, Italy) and served as a member of the Organizing Committee of the 3rd Conference of Islamic Academy of Sciences on `New High Technologies and the Development of the Muslim World' (Dec 2-5, 1989, Kuwait). Dr. Khan, on the invitation of Pakistan University Grants Commission (UGC), has also been working for the establishment of SSNTD-Laboratories to carry out basic research and applied work on international level at various institutions in Pakistan, which inter alia include: Punjab University (Lahore); Bahauddin Zakariya University (Multan); Gomal University (D.I.Khan); and Government College University (Lahore). He also holds a Visiting Professorship at the Physics Department of B.Z. University, Multan. 3 4. Life Sketch Dr. Hameed Ahmed Khan was born in Yangon (Burma) in 1942 and migrated to Pakistan in 1947. He obtained his college and university level education at F.C. College and Govt. College, Lahore, nationally acclaimed for its academic excellence. Dr. Hameed Khan earned B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees from Punjab University in 1963 and 1964, respectively, and later on secured a mark of distinction by winning the `Role of Honours’, from Government College, Lahore. Dr. Hameed Khan began his professional career in 1965 by joining Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) as Scientific Officer. In the early days of his career he participated in commissioning Pakistan’s first Research Reactor (PARR- 1). His scientific abilities were duly and right away recognized and he was sent to England for higher studies in 1968 by PAEC. He obtained M.S. degree in Reactor Physics and Ph.D. degree with specialization in Radiation Physics from Birmingham University (U.K.) in 1969 and 1972 respectively. Dr. Hameed Khan's Ph.D. research work produced 20 internationally acclaimed research publications - a rare honour and a great pride for a Ph.D. student. During his Ph.D. research work, Dr. Hameed Khan not only developed a new radiation detection system but also applied it extremely successfully to various branches of science. He also has the honour of working on moon- samples, brought back by Apollo (American) and Luna (Russian)-space missions. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Hameed Khan was offered a post-doctorate assignment at Birmingham University (U.K.), where he served on the research /teaching faculties of the university till 1974.
