Dr. Kalam made significant contribution as Project Director to develop India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully injected the Rohini satellite in the near earth orbit in July 1980 and made India an exclusive member of Space Club. He was responsible for the evolution of ISRO's launch vehicle programme, particularly the PSLV configuration. After working for two decades in ISRO and mastering launch vehicle technologies, Dr. Kalam took up the responsibility of developing Indigenous Guided Missiles at Defence Research and Development Organisation as the Chief Executive of Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). He was responsible for the development and operationalisation of AGNI and PRITHVI Missiles and for building indigenous capability in critical technologies through networking of multiple institutions. He was the Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development from July 1992 to December 1999. During this period he led to the weaponisation of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in collaboration with Department of Atomic Energy, which made India a nuclear weapon State. He also gave thrust to self-reliance in defence systems by progressing multiple development tasks and mission projects such as Light Combat Aircraft. As Chairman of Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) and as an eminent scientist, he led the country with the help of 500 experts to arrive at Technology Vision 2020 giving a road map for transforming India from the present developing status to a developed nation. Dr. Kalam has served as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, in the rank of Cabinet Minister, from November 1999 to November 2001 and was responsible for evolving policies, strategies and missions for many development applications. Page 2 Volume 7, Issue 3 | July — September, 2015 BOOKS Wings of fire An Autobiography: APJ Abdul Kalam With Arun Tiwari Published By: Universities Press, (India) Private Limited, Hyderabad. Wing of Fire is an autography of APJ Abdul Kalam covering his early life and his work in Indian space research and missile programs. It is the story of a boy from a humble background who went on to become a key player in Indian space research/ Indian missile programs and later became the president of India. The book has been very popular in India and has been translated into multiple languages. The book covers a lot of "behind the scene" information and technical details about India’s satellite and missile program (SLV-3, Prithvi, Agni, Thrisul, Akash and Nag). This might interest technically inclined readers but is sure to put off readers who bought the book to get to know Kalam or to know his principles/ideas. Space and missile programs are huge complex projects and managing them is extremely challenging. The book does give a glimpse of the participatory management technique adopted by Kalam, but at the same time it doesn’t go into details. Kalam is a poet and is a huge fan of poems. The book contains many of his own poems and his favorite poems. Here is an example, Do not look at Agni as an entity directed upward to deter the ominous or exhibit your might. It is fire in the heart of an Indian. Do not even give it the form of a missile as it clings to the burning pride of this nation and thus is bright. Through Wings of Fire, we come across some brilliant people who worked behind Indian space research such as Vikram Sarabhai and Dr. Brahm Prakash. The book also contains about 24 photos. One of the things that stand out throughout the book is Kalam’s positive thinking. He held many high ranking positions in various organizations. Yet in the book he rarely mentions anything about lethargy/corruption of bureaucracy or politicians. The secret to his success seems to be his ability to ignore negative things around him. The book also gives a clue to his popularity in India. Kalam is a simple, secular, inspiring humanitarian. Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power within India New, Delhi, Penguin Global (first published 2002), 178 pages ISBN (ISBN13: 9780143029823) Ignited minds are a book written by scientist-patriot Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, who was the President of India from 2002 to 2007. The book was first published in 2002, and the full title of the book is Ignited Minds - Unleashing the Power within India. Ignited Minds is a logical step forward from Dr. Kalam's earlier book, India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium (ISBN 0-670-04928-X). This book consists of many inspirational messages by A P J Abdul Kalam. Dr. Kalam has dedicated Ignited Minds to an intermediate school child, named Snehal Thakkar, whom he met at a school (named Anandalaya in Anand, Gujarat) and while talking to the students, a question had come up: "Who is our enemy?” Kalam recalled that many answers came up, but the answer on which all agreed came from her (Snehal Thakkar): "Our enemy is poverty". The small book of 205 pages contains dynamic and original ideas, examines attitudes afflicting the Indians, and present prescriptions for rapid growth of India to enable the country to emerge as a developed country. The scientist and the seer inside Kalam have addressed the book to young citizen(s) of India. Particular attention is given to the vorticity field structure associated with the three-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting waves, the visualization and analysis of longitudinal vortices at curved walls of two-dimensional laminar and turbulent channel flows, and flat plate drag reduction by turbulence manipulation. Other topics include the char- acteristics of a typical lifting symmetric supercritical air foil, a Monte Carlo simulation for molecular gas dynamics, and a profile of aerodynamic research in VSSC with application to satellite launch vehicles. The Luminous Sparks A biography in verse and colours: APJ Abdul Kalam Published By: Punya Publishing Private Limited, Bangalore, Poems are the result of peak happiness or sorrow. Common traits of both happiness and sorrow are tears. In one case, tears will be sweet. In another case, it will be salty. Human life is a combination of both. This reminds me of the great Poet Saint Thiruvalluvar. He says. "Successful leaders can never be defeated by problems. They become master of the situation and defeat the problems." Page 4 Volume 7, Issue 3 | July — September, 2015 Envisioning an Empowered Nation Technology for Societal Transformation: APJ Abdul Kalam With A Sivathanu Pillai New Delhi, Tata McGraw-Hill Publishing Company Limited, 2007 "WE MUST get rid of the inferiority complex and defeat the defeatist spirit that plagues us," highlighted in the very beginning of the book gives a glimpse of the authors' intent to infuse confidence in the young mind to dream big. The book allows the reader to peep inside the mind of the country's greatest scientists and the way they think and feel about India and the urge within them to see India as a developed nation by 2020. In their characteristic style, the authors have gone in a methodical way to high- light the country's strengths in various walks of life, time and again reminding the readers that India too can become a developed nation in a span of two decades. The various instances cited wherein the scientists fired with zeal and enthusiasm has come out successful should put to rest any element of self- doubt in the young reader. The book is lavishly peppered with advice and guidance without sounding pedantic. It cites specific areas where technologies have to be developed or upgraded. In the same breath, it brings to light several important technologies developed or implemented by industry to improve productivity. These help the reader get a bird's-eye view of India's technological capability and the areas where more work need to be done. Take the instance of a chapter dedicated to health care. Here, the authors take note of the steps taken by the Centre for Biotechnology at Anna University to create a database of traditional medicinal plants for specific bioactivity. They then make a passionate plea for all traditional healers to use modern approaches to validate their products. They cite the example of the Delhi based defence research laboratory using the herbal extract of Aloe Vera to completely cure frostbite without resorting to amputation to drive home the importance of the Indian herbal system. The book also dwells on the various achievements in the strategic sectors particularly space and aerospace and several successes that can soon be expected. Special mention made about combating failures will go down well with the target audience. Failures are to be faced courageously so that the focus is not lost, the authors write. They should know best as success with the SLV-3 launch or the Prithvi missile development, to name a few, has always been preceded by failures. Several examples cited, many from personal experience, show the potential that India as a country holds especially when it works as a team sans imaginary walls. The book is not just about areas where the authors' expertise is well known. It spans areas as diverse as agriculture, health and IT other than defence projects where such teamwork had paid dividends. What makes the enumeration all the more interesting is that it is mostly a first person’s account. What will keep the readers glued is the passion and intensity with which the authors draw a roadmap for making India a developed nation by 2020. The book provides the reader with enough material to draw inspiration and work towards realising the dream. Several illustrations, photographs, tables and charts are used judiciously which makes reading a pleasure. Salient features highlighted in coloured boxes and details of important points at the end of every chapter make the book quite different from others. My Journey: Transforming Dreams into Actions NewDelhi, V. Suryanarayana Murty, 20 From a small boy growing up in Rameswaram, to becoming the country’s eleventh President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s life has been a tale of extraordinary determination, courage, perseverance and the desire to excel. In this series of anecdotes and profiles, Dr Kalam looks back on key moments in his past momentous and tells the reader how each of them inspired him profoundly. With warmth and affection, he talks about the people who left a deep impression on him as he was growing up and as an adult, and the lessons he drew from his interactions with them. He describes those who have been the closest to him, his father with his deep love of God, his mother and her great kindness, his mentors who helped shape his thoughts and outlook. There are heart-warming accounts here of his childhood years spent in a small town by the Bay of Bengal and the many struggles and sacrifices made on the path to becoming a scientist and then the President of India. Dr Kalam also writes about the times when failure and dejection nearly overtook him and how he prevailed over those obstacles by drawing strength from books and spirituality. Page 5 Kokan News زوـیـن نـكوـك The Life Tree Published By: Penguin Books India (Private) Limited, New Delhi. Poems: A.P.J.Abdul Kalam Painting illustrations by Manav Gupta Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has contributed invaluably to our country's progress in space research and defence technologies. However, he is not only an eminent scientist. He is also a sensitive and thoughtful poet. This confluence of scientific brilliance and poetic talent is truly unique. The poem contained in this book brings out Dr. Kalam's deep love for India and her rich culture. Together with his devotion to God and to this Motherland, his devotion to humanity is also uniquely manifested in these poems. Believing his ability and achievements to be God's gifts, he has dedicated them to the welfare of the Indian people. Through the medium of his poetry he has send a message of selfless service, dedication and pure faith. Dr. Kalam has always been an opponent of communalism, casteism, linguistic chauvinism, regionalism and violence. Showing a profound understanding of Indian society, he attempts to find solution to problems with compassion, detachment, forbearance and sympathy. In this poem he has attempted, very credibly, to express in simple terms even a concept as a complex as the search for God. 'O creator of dreams, Why do you keep searching for God? Nature is His home, purity His abode And Life is but His blessing! Keep loving nature and care for its being, Then you can see divinity all over!' As a true Indian, Dr. Kalam is naturally distressed by the misuse of religion for ungodly ends. Nevertheless, he is confident that true faith in God and compassion for humankind can save us from the poison of communalism and casteism. He says: The so-called educated separate our souls.... They give not knowledge but hate and defeat; Tell others not to heed their unwanted advice, As the Almighty created all equal and free. Behind his scientific achievements and poetic works, Dr. Kalam dreams of better world for the children of India and the world. He says: I have no house, only open space Filled with truth, kindness, desire and dreams: Desire to see my country developed and great, Dreams to see happiness and peace abound. New Delhi, Rajpal and Sons, 2012. 104p. ISBN: 9788170286844 Selected quotations from sayings and writings of a former president, scientist, and writer from India. Page 6 Volume 7, Issue 3 | July — September, 2015 Mission India: A Vision for Indian Youth Mission India: A Vision for Indian Youth has been written with the intention of challenging the Indian youth to bring about a positive change in the country by 2020. Kalam starts off by telling the readers that there has never been a time in Indian history such as this, where the nation has 540 million youth and 20 million Indians across the globe. He also states that several developed countries have directed their efforts towards setting up research centers across the country, which has benefited scientists, engineers, and professionals from various spheres. Kalam and Rajan tell the readers about their goal to make India one among the five top economic powers in the world by 2020. In the beginning of this book, Kalam presents the readers with a question as to whether India can become a developed country. He then provides insights into the current situation in the country, and explains that this goal is a realistic one. In the subsequent chapters, Kalam and Rajan begin to examine the five industries that need to become reasonably self-sufficient in the coming years, and each chapter tells the readers what can be done to bring a positive change in each industry. They also tell the readers about the current education system in the country, and the latest technology that can be used to improve the quality of education. The readers are also given insights into the present healthcare industry and infrastructural system, which are trademarks of a developed nation. Kalam and Rajan conclude by telling every individual and organization about the role they can play in transforming the nation by 2020. Children Ask Kalam Children and A.P.J. Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges: The Inspiring Sequel to Wings of Fire It was like any other day on the Anna University campus in Chennai. I had delivered a lecture 'Vision to Mission' and the session got extended from one hour to two. I had lunch with a group of research students and went back to class. As I was returning to my rooms in the evening the vice-chancellor, Prof. A. Kalanidhi, fell in step with me. Someone had been frantically trying to get in touch with me through the day, he said. Indeed, the phone was ringing when I entered the room. When I answered, a voice at the other end said, 'The prime minister wants to talk with you ...' Some months earlier, I had left my post as principal scientific adviser to the government of India, a Cabinet-level post, to return to teaching. Now, as I spoke to the PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, my life was set for an unexpected change. Turning Points take up the incredible Kalam story from where Wings of Fire left off. It brings together details from his career and presidency that are not generally known as he speaks out for the first time on certain points of controversy. It offers insight not only into an extraordinary personality but also a vision of how a country with a great heritage can become great in accomplishment, skills and abilities through effort, perseverance and confidence. It is a continuing saga, above all, of a journey, individual and collective, that will take India to 2020 and beyond as a developed nation. Page 8 Volume 7, Issue 3 | July — September, 2015 Target 3 Billion is a book by the former President of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, and Srijan Pal Singh. The book highlights the issues prevailing in rural India and suggests measures to improve standards of living. It focuses on the inclusive development project called PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas). The book plans to improve the standard of living amongst the poor rural population through voluntary campaigns such as community participa- tion and entrepreneurship. It cites the examples of Fabio Rosa who helped in changing the structure of Palmares, a rural district in Brazil, by rural electrification. The access to water and electricity and better agricul- tural methods had led to prosperity in the region. Further, it describes Magarpatta, the organi- sation of Magarpatta city, which now provides home to over 35,000 people and the develop- ment of an IT park. Each chapter has a topic that consists of a set of essays on different aspects of that main topic. Guiding Souls Dialogues on the Purpose of life: A.P.J. Page 9 Kokan News زوـیـن نـكوـك Indomitable Spirit is a book authored by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the former president of India. The cover page of the book says it "brings together the values, thoughts and ideas of President Kalam as reflected in his speeches and addresses. Interspersed with interesting anecdotes and observations, Indomitable Spirit represents the quintessential APJ Abdul Kalam - the man, the scientist, the teacher and the President." The book begins with reproduction of a sentence from President's address to the nation on the eve of 57th Republic Day: "The basis of all systems, social or political, rests upon the goodness of men. No nation is great or good because parliament enacts this or that, but that its men are great and good." The book ends with these words of Sir C. V. Raman, the Nobel laureate from his address to a group of young graduates in 1969: "I can assert without fear of contradiction that the quality of the Indian mind is equal to the quality of any Teutonic, Nordic or Anglo-Saxon mind. What we lack is perhaps courage, what we lack is perhaps the driving force which takes one anywhere. We have, I think, developed an inferiority complex. I think what is needed in India today is the destruction of that defeatist spirit." The President Kalam winds up the spirit of the Indomitable Spirit from these words of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore: Give me the strength never to disown the poor Or bend my knees before insolent might. Give me the strength To raise my head high above daily trifles. And give me the strength To surrender my strength to Thy will with love.
