Change has been the major constant during the Hospital Center’s 171 years of service and has inspired and challenged the leaders of yesterday. Change stimulates and demands the best of today’s leaders and requires us to reach out to an ever-widening circle of leaders to help guide us through the dynamic forces of healthcare. In this regard, The Brooklyn Hospital Foundation and its Founders Ball play an indispensable role. I acknowledge and welcome Karen Peetz, President, BNY Mellon, to the Hospital family. I would also like to recognize the many Founders Medalists who have continued their involvement with the Hospital, among them Christopher M. Conlon, EVP & COO, Acadia Realty Trust; Bruce Mosler, Chairman, Global Brokerage, Cushman & Wakefield; MaryAnne Gilmartin, President & CEO, Forest City Ratner Companies; Robert Knakal, Chairman, NY Investment Sales, Cushman & Wakefield; and Robert B. Catell, AERTC, Stony Brook University. I am so pleased that two of TBHC’s finest physicians are being honored tonight for their excellence and dedication to the Hospital’s community – Dr. Abraham Jelin, Division Chief, Pediatric Gastroenterology; and Angela D. Kerr, Chief, Gynecology. Their dedication is at the heart of our core mission - to provide a single standard of care to all regardless of ability to pay. In the coming months, I will be announcing a number of key decisions that will propel the Hospital forward. I salute you for your generosity and hope to have the pleasure of greeting each and every one of you. Gary G. Terrinoni President & CEO, The Brooklyn Hospital Center Dear Supporters, Thank you for joining us for the 2016 Founders Ball benefiting The Brooklyn Hospital Center and its Foundation. Everyone involved in tonight’s event at Barclays Center plays a vital role in bringing quality healthcare to the amazing community of Brooklyn. This evening is dedicated to YOU—those who have tirelessly and generously supported The Brooklyn Hospital and its mission; those who have devoted their careers to serving our neighbors; and those who walk away from tonight caring a little deeper about The Brooklyn Hospital Center’s future. We are honored to celebrate the accomplishments of 3 exceptional individuals. The Founders Medal will be presented to Karen Peetz, President, BNY Mellon. Karen has worked in the financial industry for over 30 years. She has been long recognized by her peers for her superb management and leadership skills, as well as her commitment with BNY Mellon to focus on diversity and inclusion. The prestigious Walter E. Reed Medal will be awarded to two Brooklyn Hospital Center physicians who exemplify, above all else, commitment to the community of Brooklyn through quality care: Angela D. Kerr, MD, Chief, Gynecology, and Abraham Jelin, MD, Division Chief, Pediatric Gastroenterology. Our great thanks to our Founders Ball Leadership: Lori Acker, Armand Asarian, MD, Harry Dym, DDS, Leo Ehrline, Maria Fiorini Ramirez, Peter Meyer, Joshua Rosenberg, MD, Josh Schneps, Susan Skerritt, and Lenue H. Singletary, III whose hard work and dedication made tonight’s celebration possible. And for the second year in a row, we welcome Sukanya Krishnan, PIX11 Morning Anchor, as our dynamic emcee. Tonight’s proceeds will make a tremendous impact upon all we do to provide patient centered care at The Brooklyn Hospital Center! Carlos P. Naudon Dino J. Veronese Chairman, The Brooklyn Chairman, The Brooklyn Hospital Center Hospital Foundation The Brooklyn Hospital Center Leadership The Brooklyn Hospital Center Leadership The Founders Medal commemorates the spirit and tradition of volunteerism, philanthropy, and service to the community exhibited by the original founders of The Brooklyn Hospital Center. In 1839 the city of Brooklyn was already 200 years old, but there was no hospital. Recognizing the need for a voluntary hospital, Mayor Cyrus P. Smith persuaded his friends Augustus Graham, Henry E. Pierrepont, A.A.Low, William Packer, and others to support his vision. Six years later, in 1845, The Brooklyn City Hospital was incorporated. The Founders Medal recognizes individuals and institutions whose leadership demonstrates the commitment of these founders to volunteerism, philanthropy, and community service. The Walter E. Reed Medal commemorates the career and excellence of a great physician of The Brooklyn Hospital Center. Just as the Hospital today sees its natural function as a setting for bringing doctors together and providing a climate for each to advance professionally through association with others, in the nineteenth century the hospital was instrumental in redirecting Walter E. Reed, who at the time was studying to be a surgeon, into the field of public health and epidemiology. Dr. Reed’s studies set him on his path to eradicating yellow fever. The Walter E. Reed Medal is presented annually to a member or members of the Medical Staff of The Brooklyn Hospital Center and recognizes excellence in clinical practice, medical education, or biomedical research as well as a longstanding commitment to The Brooklyn Hospital Center.
