INTRODUCTION With the approach of CLOC’s 40th anniversary season, there was increasing discussion among those close to the organization about what might be an appropriate way to celebrate this extraordinary event. The obvious device was to hold some sort of a gala celebration. These are in themselves great events, but require enormous amounts of work to be done right. They are usually tied in to an endowment or building fund- raising effort to make that enormous effort worthwhile. CLOC had recently completed a successful capital campaign for the renovation of two of its dormitories on the West Falmouth campus and we concluded that a new campaign at this time was not appropriate and would probably not be successful. Further discussion began to center on the idea of bringing F. Paul Driscoll’s 25th anniversary history and annals of the Company up-to-date and a consensus emerged that this would be a good thing, but who was there to do it. th Paul had written the narrative, compiled the annals, and produced the 25 anniversary gala by himself. It was a huge undertaking and not one we could lend too much time to because we were involved in producing the th 25 anniversary season, itself a huge undertaking. Paul did a brilliant job on the book itself and then on the 25th gala celebration event. By 2008, he had been Editor-in-Chief of Opera News for 5 years and was in no position to offer his services again. Somewhere during these discussions, our good friend and nephew, Erik Haslun, joined in. He took a look at the scope of the project, and then volunteered to take it on as a personal gift to the Company. His only stipulation was that he could not continue the narrative prose portion of the book. We discussed this at some length with him and agreed to ask him to proceed with the update. He was able to incorporate all of the detailed work done by Paul Driscoll for the 25th anniversary book and then began painstakingly adding the up-dates since the 1993 season. Fortunately, desktop computing has come a remarkably long way in 15 years and manipulating and editing files was considerably easier than it had been. Nonetheless, there were many hours of painstaking data entry that had to be undertaken and many details had to be worked over to insure the best accuracy possible. During the course of the revisions, Erik came up with several new and expanded sections for the annals. The most interesting and useful to CLOC fanatics is the table he added so that one can look up a title of any CLOC show and then compare cast lists for each production. To answer the question, “Who played Katisha in the Mikado over the years?” one only has to go to that show and page down the cast list to Katisha and there they all are! Other new sections include a list of production and business staff for all years by position, a list of all holders of endowed chairs by year and production totals of musical and stage Directors. Who are the “Annals of the College Light Opera Company” for? Well, they are for everyone with an interest in CLOC. Scholars and researchers will find incredible amounts of useful information. An author writing a biography of Nancy Anderson, for example, can go here and find everything about her stage life with CLOC. People with random memory questions about who played what when or what was the cast of a show in 1970 can easily find the information. It should be a great Trivial Pursuits reference also for died-in-the-wool CLOC groupies! This volume is available in hard copy from us for $125.00, and is available at our website for free downloading or reference – www.collegelightoperacompany.com Our sincere thanks to F. Paul Driscoll and Erik Haslun for making this record of the CLOC saga possible. We look forward to a continued and long friendship with them both! Robert and Ursula Haslun Oberlin, Ohio, December 2010 P.S. As with any such reference volume, the possibility for errors to creep in is large. We ask anyone who discovers such errors to please tell us about them so that we can correct them.
