The story of my life with Bhagwan Rajneesh A memoir by MA ANAND SHEELA 0 FINGERPRINT! ‘Osho is the most original thinker that India has produced: the most erudite, the most clearheaded and the most innovative.’ Khushwant Singh ‘Osho will long be remembered as a great philosopher—saint and mystic of the twentieth century.’ Manmohan Singh ‘People like Osho are way ahead of their time. It is a good sign that the youth of today is reading more and more of Osho.’ K. R. Narayanan ‘Osho is an enlightened master, who is working with all possibilities to help humanity to overcome a difficult phase in developing consciousness.’ His Holiness, The Dalai Lama Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho) Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, perhaps the most controversial Indian spiritual guru till date, is counted among the most influential figures of the twentieth century. He set up His first major ashram in Pune, and later moved to the US, where His followers established a commune in Oregon. Named Rajneeshpuram, this commune was spread over 64,000 acres and was like a city in itself, housing more than 5,000 residents by 1985. Over time, it developed its own urban infrastructure, complete with fire departments, a transportation system, a police station, shopping malls, a water reservoir, a sewage-disposal plant, a post-office, a well-staffed security force, and even a 1,300-metre-long airstrip. Till 1990s, Bhagwan was a bigger controversial figure than a major spiritual guru. Though He enjoyed a massive international following even back then, His irreverent discourses and ideas, rumours about drug addiction, and His general disregard for laws and religions ensured that He had many critics and enemies everywhere, particularly in India and in the States. 6 His espousal of freer sexuality alarmed religious leaders in India and popularized Him as “Sex Guru.” Later in the US, He earned the sobriquet “Rolls-Royce Guru” as He indulged in His desire for luxury cars and collected close to hundred Rolls- Royces in less than five years. He reportedly had a penchant for luxury watches and pens as well and spent hundreds and thousands of dollars of donation money on them. When Rajneeshpuram dissolved in mid-1980s, Bhagwan was indicted on thirty-five counts—charges included immi¬ gration violations as well as making false statements on His visa application. At the same time, other Rajneeshpuram leaders, including Ma Sheela, were booked for much graver charges. These included attempts to murder public officials, setting an enormous wiretapping network, and plotting the first bio-terror attack on the United States. While Bhagwan was fined $400,000 and was deported from the country, some commune leaders were sentenced to many years of imprison¬ ment. When nearly twenty-one countries denied Him entry, Bhagwan returned to His ashram in Pune in 1986, where He lived for another four years. A cardiac arrest reportedly killed Him in 1990. Today, Bhagwan’s official Facebook page has more than 750,000 Likes; His 650 books, available in 55 languages, have sold millions of copies worldwide; and His ashram in Pune still attracts 200,000 visitors annually from all over the world. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh perhaps was born great; in His life He achieved greatness; and after His death a greater greatness was thrust upon Him. But no man is perfect. And great men like Bhagwan Rajneesh often have greater flaws. 7
