He is both a doctor and a writer, and also has a degree in anthro­ pology. His books, translated into six languages, include: a collection of short stories, The Exploding Newspaper & Other Fables; a book of essays, Body Myths (published in the USA as The Body of Frankenstein's Monster: essays in myth and medicine); and a textbook, Culture, Health and Illness. His short stories and prose poems have been included in ten anthologies - and in many literary magazines - in the USA, Britain and South Africa. In 1983-84, he was a Visiting Fellow in Social Medicine and Health Policy, at Harvard Medical School. Currently he is Associate Professor of Medical Anthropology at Brunei University, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences, Royal Free and University College Medical School.
