ISSN 0957-9818 2 DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE Welcome DWM 579 H appy times and places indeed – it seems we’ve got two new Doctors to look forward to, not to mention the return of Donna Noble. But before all that, Jodie Whittaker will bring her remarkable tenure to an end in a Centenary Special loaded with surprises. With the help of current showrunner Chris Chibnall and incoming showrunner Russell T Davies, we’ll keep you up to date every step of the way. In the meantime, there’s a wealth of archive treasures to enjoy. Shiny new discs of Season 22 and Dr. Who and the Daleks should arrive any day now, and I’ve been enjoying the recent HD remasters of Gerry Anderson’s Stingray. This was the fi rst British television series made entirely in colour, and restoring all those fi lm elements from nearly 60 years ago must have been tricky. The results, however, are stunning. The other day I was comparing notes with one of DWM’s contributors, who pointed out to me that in the newly restored episodes you can occasionally see the hands of puppeteers straying into shot. I added that, in the episode I’d just seen, I noticed one of the puppet’s hats hovering slightly above its head, as it appeared to have been caught on one of the wires. Sometimes, watching the restorations of Doctor Who episodes can reveal new things too. Last year, Peter Ware told me he’d spotted some unique typography in the title sequences for the fi rst two to own the best possible versions of the episodes of Terror of the Autons. The DVD programmes I cherish, but maybe I need certainly didn’t have that version of the to remember why I admired them so much title sequence, although I gather the in the fi rst place. Blu-ray recreates the exact typography While we’re at it, maybe it’s time to also that viewers in 1971 would have seen. stop overthinking the forthcoming episodes Which is all well and good, but of Doctor Who. It’s fun to speculate, but recently it occurred to me that hovering how many people actually know how the Supermarionation hats and eccentric on-screen reunion of David Tennant’s title-sequence typography aren’t things Doctor and Catherine Tate’s Donna will be literally revealed by the luxurious resolution explained? Let alone the role Neil Patrick of high defi nition. That hat always hovered Harris’ character will play in all of this. above the Stingray puppet’s head – it’s just Russell T Davies’ plan will be revealed in that I hadn’t noticed it before. And this is good time. Until then, whether I’m waiting the problem with upgrading from DVD to the Stingray crew in the undersea realm for new episodes or rewatching old ones, Blu-ray, especially when you’re watching of Titanica, or the Doctor trying to outwit I’m happy to live in the moment. fi lms and television series that you’re the Master, I’ve found myself watching the super-familiar with.
