Pope’s Message Challenges Us
to LIVE our Faith
A message from General Minister Sister Joanne Brazinski, OSF
“Go! Do Not be Afraid! Serve! If you follow theses three ideas, you will
experience that the one who evangelizes is evangelized; the one who trans-
mits the joy of faith receives joy” ~ Pope Francis
These simple and few words of Pope Francis from the final liturgy for
World Youth Day touched and continue to touch many hearts. He was
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with young people from all over the world
excited about their faith; over 3 million persons attended the final Mass at
Copacabana. People waited in long lines for the metro or for the buses, not
complaining but enjoying the camaraderie and trying to communicate beyond
what words could express. Some arrived Friday for the Stations of the Cross
and literally camped out on the beach all night and the next day, awaiting the
vigil service on Saturday and the Eucharistic Liturgy on Sunday morning.
Teachers and students from our three schools in Brazil and the Social
Center participated in the experience. Sixteen of our sisters from Brazil were there as well as three of us
from the United States. It is difficult to put the experience into words – Pope Francis’ message was so
much more than the words he spoke. As his patron, Saint Francis of Assisi, he preached the gospel with
his life. With every gesture, every action, every smile, joy and faith were being communicated. During
these days in Brazil his message was not just for the youth of the world, but for every person desiring to
have their faith ignited, to be challenged to incarnate what they believe, to go beyond the comfort zone
of their usual boundaries and to serve with a gracious heart.
With his words, his presence, his example, Pope Francis challenged all of us to LIVE our faith, to let
our actions proclaim the good news, and to not be afraid to serve others, especially the most vulnerable.
He challenged all to be generous with Christ, to bear witness to the gospel.
This issue of the Whitehall Franciscan shares a little about how we as a community continue to bear
witness to the gospel in simple yet concrete ways: serving with joyful hearts where the Providence of
God sends us, joining with others to combat human trafficking and to end the death penalty. This issue

also gives us the chance to say a heartfelt “Thank You” to those who continue to be part of this gospel

Congregation Attends World Youth Day 2013
“Go and make disciples among all nations!” (MT 28:19)
This command of Jesus was chosen by Pope Benedict XVI
as the theme for World Youth Day which took place in
Rio de Janiero, Brazil, July 23 through 28. Taken from the
end of Matthew’s Gospel, the context of the theme is to respect
the Resurrection of Christ. The disciples, who until then were
frightened and locked inside, encounter Christ, the victor over
death. It is in this context that Christ gives the mandate: Go!
Go because He is alive and He walks in front of His friends. Go
because Christ is victor and remains with each member of the
Church. Go and announce the resurrection.
World Youth Day (WYD) provides an international meeting of
young people with the Pope, usually every two or three years. The
WYDs has its origin in large meetings with the youth celebrated
by Pope John Paul II in Rome. The initial international youth
meeting on the occasion of the Holy Year of Redemption came Millions of youth greet Pope Francis I at World Youth Day.
in 1984, in St. Peter’s Square. The first WYD was held in Buenos
Aires, Argentina, in 1987 with one million participants. The last edition of WYD was held in August, 2011, in Madrid, Spain, and
brought together two million youth from more than 190 countries.
The Rio WYD hosted over 3 million youngsters from all over the word. Among those taking part in this year’s festivities were
students from our congregation’s three schools and social center in São Paulo, under the guidance of teachers and pastoral teams
from each school. Nineteen of our Sisters also participated in this year’s event.
Students from Pio XII School described it as a wonderful experience of faith
and encounter with many diverse cultures. A group of youngsters from the
Pittsburgh diocese joined in the WYD celebration.
Since this was the first time that WYD took place in Brazil, there was every
effort to make sure that as many young people as possible could take part in
the event. As an example, our Sister Maria José da Conçeicão prepared a group
of young people from the Diocese of Aracuai to participate. The congregation
assumed the responsibility of the $600 registration fee for three youngsters
from Itinga.
Sister Janet Gardner’s New Ministry at Beatitude House
Sister Janet Gardner, OSF, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence
of God, has been appointed executive director of Beatitude House, located in
Youngstown, OH. Sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, Beatitude
House addresses the needs of the area’s disadvantaged women and children.
In 1990, an anonymous donor gave the Ursuline sisters a Tudor home on
Youngstown’s north side. That building was transformed into an apartment complex
as part of the agency’s transitional housing services, providing shelter for women
and children. Soon after, two other complexes were added to the program. In
addition, Beatitude House offers an English language learners program and a career
preparation service.
Prior to her appointment, Sister Janet served as general minister for our
Beatitude House’s Warren, OH location held a
congregation. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Carlow University and Master’s small coffee reception to introduce Sr. Janet to the
degree in social work from the Catholic University of America and is a member Warren community. It was attended by, from left to

Pittsburgh Hosts 2013 Franciscan Federation
Approximately 300 Franciscans, members of more than 75 religious congregations, attended the Franciscan Federation’s
annual conference, hosted this year in the city of Pittsburgh, or more specifically, the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center,
from July 19th through the 22nd. Each year, the conference gathers to pray together, to meet and discuss issues of concern
as members of the Franciscan Federation – religious sisters, brothers, priests and those who serve with them in schools, colleges,
parishes, hospitals and communities in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. The theme for this year’s gathering was
“Franciscan Life in Evolution” and featured two prominent Franciscan scholars as presenters, Sister Ilia Delio, OSF, and Keith
Warner, OFM.
In the 1960s, the major superiors of the Franciscan communities of women religious became convinced that the time had come
for collaboration among themselves. They founded the Federation of Franciscan Sisters in 1965 for the purpose of working together
to renew religious life as followers of St. Francis of Assisi. Sixteen years later, the Federation widened its membership to include
the Third Order Regular men and is now officially the Franciscan Federation of the Sisters and Brothers of the Third Order Regular
of the United States.
The mission of the Federation is to promote the exploration and study of Franciscan evangelical life and its implications for
these times and for our world. The Federation provides national and regional opportunities to collaborate, gather and celebrate so
that the sisters and brothers can better live the Third Order regular call to conversion, contemplation, poverty and humility.
Sister Althea Anne Spencer Among Honorees
Congratulations, Sister Althea Anne! Each year at the Franciscan
Federation Conference, a sister from each member congregation receives
the Peacemaker Award at the festive closing dinner. The members of
each congregation nominate and select a sister from the theme for the
conference. This year’s theme was “Franciscan Life In Evolution.” Criteria
included someone who recognizes the interconnectedness of all creation
and who has integrated science, theology and spirituality in her life and
ministry. Sister Althea certainly meets those criteria.
Sister’s service to others focuses on youth, women and those needing
assistance. Her early years were spent in education ministry that included
11 years at St. Francis Academy. Presently, she continues to serve through
various outreach ministries to include the Connecting Women’s Wisdom
retreat programs that bring together women of all ages and background
for sharing and reflection. She is also active with the Pittsburgh Religious

college students. Recognizing the need for emotional and physical healing,
Sister also serves others through spiritual direction.
Most recently, Sister Althea was a member of the congregation’s leadership team, serving as a councilor from 2009 through
2012. As chairperson of the site committee for this year’s conference, she was also instrumental in preparing for this year’s event
at the Marriott.

Francis of Assisi - The Green Saint
St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and environment, could be viewed as the original Earth Day advocate. Francis’
devotion to God was expressed through his love for all of God’s creation.
On November 29, 1979, Pope John Paul II proclaimed St. Francis
of Assisi to be the patron saint “of those who promote ecology.”
(Ecology in Europe refers to what we in the United States
call environmentalism, not just the science of ecology.) The Catholic,
non-Catholic and the scientific community unanimously hailed this
proclamation. Three years later, on World Environment Day 1982, the
Pope said that St. Francis’ love and care for creation were a challenge for
contemporary Catholics. Eight years later, on the occasion of the World
Day of Peace 1990, the Pope wrote that the poor man of Assisi “offers
Christians an example of genuine and deep respect for the integrity of
creation.” The Pope concluded his document with these words: “It is my
hope that the inspiration of St. Francis will help us to keep ever alive a sense
of ‘fraternity’ with all those good and beautiful things which Almighty God
has created.”
Why did the Church choose St. Francis from the huge galaxy of saints for this unique title? Because no other saint has befriended
creation as did this saint. St. Francis perceived that the entire world was brimming with power, wisdom, beauty and goodness of
the Creator. Every creature, however insignificant, was a vestige, an image, a footprint, a signature of the Creator whose glory it
proclaimed. For him, everything was a sacrament of God’s presence. The whole world is a sanctuary, a tabernacle where God abides
and where the Spirit indwells. This realization that everything comes from the same source filled St. Francis with greater affection
than ever and he called the most insignificant creatures his brothers and sisters because he knew that they had the same origin as him.
For Francis, the world was not made up of objects to satisfy either human need or greed. Francis saw the world in terms of
relationships of cooperation rather than competition. Francis’ example inspires us to approach nature with deep respect, admiration,
sympathy and communion. His attitude of being-with all created things inspires us in our commitment to care for the Earth, to
sustain and preserve what God has given us.
The bishops of the United States published a document in 1992 entitled “Renewing the Earth.” In it the bishops praised St.
Francis while reminding their readers, “Safeguarding creation requires us to live responsibly in it, rather than managing creation
as though we are outside it.” They added that we should see ourselves as stewards within creation, not as separated from it. St.
Francis saw himself, like today’s environmentalists, as part of the ecosystem, not as a proud master over and above it. Pope Emeritus
Benedict XVI reminds us, “We have a responsibility towards future generations and towards humanity as a whole and the Church
must assert this responsibility in the public sphere.”
Because of people like St. Francis, we will find alternative ways to live in the 21st century. Let us be inspired by the life of St.
Francis to protect the environment today on behalf of future generations.
Tai Chi for Health
Many in today’s hectic and fast paced society are finding healing
through slowing down. Described by many of the students as
“meditation in motion,” Tai Chi classes at the Franciscan Spirit
and Life Center have been growing in popularity since they began in 2011.
“Tai Chi is a real lifestyle, a commitment to yourself,” said Leslie
Graham, a student in the Wednesday afternoon class. “It resets your timer
to a much more efficient setting.”
Leslie first witnessed a group Tai Chi practice while visiting California
and remembers thinking, “I don’t even know what this is, but I want to
do it.” She tried several classes in Pittsburgh until she found success with
classes at the Franciscan Spirit and Life Center taught by certified instructor
Gurney Bolster.
“You really can’t learn it off DVD. You need a live teacher. Gurney
knows what she is doing,” said Linda Fetzer, who practices Tai Chi to relieve

DHS Features Anti-Trafficking “Blue Campaign”
Each year, millions of men, women and children are trafficked
for sexual or labor exploitation worldwide, including the
United States.
Everyone has a role to play in combating human trafficking.
The federal government is taking new steps to highlight the horrors
of human trafficking and help victims of this often hidden crime. An
important part of their efforts include the Department of Homeland
Security’s “Blue Campaign,” which is the unified voice for DHS’
efforts to combat human trafficking. The campaign, part of a broad
federal push to deal with trafficking, will help more victims be
identified. “It is such an insidious crime that is often not recognized
enough,” Outgoing Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano
commented. “We want to bring it out of the shadows, go after
perpetrators, and want to make sure the victims are taken care of.”
Working in collaboration with law enforcement, government,
non-government and private organizations, the Blue Campaign strives
to protect the basic right of freedom and to bring those who exploit
human lives to justice. The campaign provides information on training
and outreach, how traffickers operate, and victim assistance to help
keep the public informed and includes training and informational
videos and materials and public awareness campaigns, victim assistance and investigative efforts. As such, it is hoped that increased
awareness and training will lead to more tips to law enforcement, which will result in more victims being identified.
DHS uses a victim-centered approach to combating human trafficking, which places equal value on the identification and
stabilization of victims, as well as the investigation and prosecution of
traffickers. Immediately connecting a victim to support services can get a
victim the help they need to recover and help bring traffickers to justice. For
example, DHS Victim Assistance Specialists help by connecting the victim to
community-based groups to provide medical, mental health, legal assistance,
case management and other such services. DHS understands, however, how
difficult it can be for victims to come forward and work with law enforcement,
due to their trauma.
DHS cannot do this alone. Take a minute to learn more about human

In Prayerful Memory
Sister M. Augusta Skulis, OSF
Born: January 7, 1926
Entered our community: July 5, 1943
Returned to God: July 28, 2013
On July 28, 2013, Sister M. Augusta Skulis, 87, died at our Motherhouse in
Pittsburgh. She served as a Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God for
70 years.
Sister Augusta was born Frances Stanislava to parents Ignatius and Anna on January
7, 1926, in Hamtramak, MI. She was educated by our Sisters at the St. Francis Academy
in Pittsburgh, and in her junior year, Sister Augusta made to decision to become a
Franciscan sister, entering the community on July 5, 1943.
Sister Augusta received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Duquesne University
and earned her Master’s from the University of Detroit. Affectionately referred to as
“Gussie, Sister was known for her joyful personality and sense of playfulness: She happily served 52 years in education ministry
as a primary grade teacher, teaching mostly first and second graders. She served in schools throughout the country where the
community served, including St. Anthony (Detroit, MI), St. Ladislaus (Hamtramak, MI), and Pittsburgh’s St. Valentine and James
Lavelle, as well as 16 years at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin.
Sister was known as an excellent educator. In 1993, she was nominated by her peers and chosen by the Diocese for the Golden
Apple Award. “I was elated when I received the Golden Apple Award in 1993,” she wrote in her memoir. “ But, most of all, I’m
grateful for being able to teach God’s little ones, giving them my love and care and instilling in them the love of God, neighbor and
themselves.”
After retiring from teaching in 1990, Sister Augusta began a new ministry as an auxiliary staff member at the Franciscan Spirit
and Life Center. She was a very welcoming presence to all who came for retreats and programs. In 2002, Sister Augusta took up
the ministry of Motherhouse sacristan, in which she faithfully served until 2012, when she fully embraced her ministry of prayer.
We are grateful for Sister Augusta’s life, dedication and service to others as a Sister of St. Francis of the Providence of God. She
will be lovingly remembered for her humor, wonderful smile, and joyful spirit that were blessings to us all.

she chooses to make a 45 minute commute to the Center from Franklin Park rather than
attend classes closer to home.
“Gurney is a wonderful teacher. A people person,” said Dianna Dunnington, a retired
nurse practicing Tai Chi on the recommendations of three doctors to ease arthritis, back
issues and pain.
“Tai Chi teaches us to pay attention to ourselves. Gives us tools to be more aware of
our sensations,” said Gurney, who has a Masters degree in dance therapy and over 35 years
experience in movement instruction. She said one goal of Tai Chi is to be as effective and
ergonomic as possible. This is achieved by calming the mind and moving strategically
before and event, such as a fall, happens.
Gurney teaches a form of Tai Chi developed by Australian physician and Tai Chi
Master Dr. Paul Lam. This form of Tai Chi is endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation as a
safe exercise that may diminish pain, prevent falls and build self confidence. The CDC also

At age 88, Dee Lamb, is using Tai Chi to improve her balance, but has found other benefits. “It keeps me moving. Keeps me
getting out. I’ve made friends. And, it’s fun!”She also finds it helps her golf game.
The Franciscan Spirit and Life Center offers beginning and continuing classes Monday evening and Wednesday afternoons. Tai
Chi can be practiced by persons of any age and any skill level, and Gurney says the longer a person practices, the more they benefit.
“I wish it had been available when I was younger.” said Leslie. “I can only imagine how I would feel today.”
