The history of cartography covers a vast field of knowledge and includes all maps and map-like graphics made by humankind since prehistoric times. Map compilation and map use today are, however, seldom dependent on maps which wereproducedbeforeearlymoderntimes.Withthisinmind, theICACommission decided to concentrate on the history of cartography since the Enlightenment— without neglecting research on earlier periods relevant to the understanding of moderncartographicdevelopments. The 6th International Symposium of the ICA Commission on the History of Cartographyhadasitsgeneraltheme“TheDisseminationofCartographicKnowl- edge: Production—Trade—Consumption—Preservation.” Under the leadership of the ICA Commission on the History of Cartography, the Symposium was jointly organized with the ICA Commission on Map Production and Geoinformation Management and the ICA Commission on Use, User, and Usability Issues, and with the collaboration of the Institute of Social Sciences “Ivo Pilar” (Zagreb, Croatia). The various paper and poster sessions were held at the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies of the University of Zagreb which is situated in the heartofthehistoriccityofDubrovnik. The papers published in this volume discuss the historical dimension of the dissemination of cartographic knowledge and the effectiveness thereof in diverse cartographicculturesandtheirrelatedusergroupsaroundtheglobe.Thisincludes thetechnologicalandconceptualaspectsofcartographicproduction(maps, charts, globes, atlases, educational tools, etc.), the usability of these techniques and the resultingproducts, aswellastheconditionsofthemaptradeasachangingnetwork ofprivateenterprisesandofficialinstitutions, andthe roleofdiverseaudiencesin v vi Preface the creation, circulation, consumption, and ultimate preservation of knowledge. Although the Symposium was primarily focused on the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, it was also open to contributions on the sharing of cartographic knowl- edgeduringearliercenturies,astheyoftenformedthebackgroundforlaterimpor- tantdevelopments. We would like to acknowledge our gratitude to the University of Zagreb and especially to its Centre for Advanced Academic Studies in Dubrovnik and their HeadofOffice,Mrs.VlastaBrunsko,forherguidanceandlogisticsupport.
