The young history of the finite element method (FEM) reflects the dramatic increase of computing speed and storage capacity within a relatively short period of time. The history of the boundary element method (BEM) is still younger. Presently, intense scientific efforts aimed at extending the range of application of the BEM can be observed. More than 10 years ago, O.C. Zienkiewicz and his co-workers published the first papers on the coupling of FE and BE discretizations of subregions of solids for the purpose of exploiting the complementary advantages of the two discretization methods and reducing their disadvantages. The FEM has revolutionized structural analysis in industry as well as academia. The BEM has a fair share in the continuation of this revolution. Both discretization methods have become a domain of vigorous, world-wide research activities. The rapid increase of the number of specialized journals and scientific meetings indicates the remarkable increase of research efforts in this important subdolll.ain of computational ulechanics. Several discussions of this situation in the Committee for Discretization Methods ill Solid Mechanics of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) resulted in the plan to submit a proposal to the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) to sponsor a pertinent IUTAM Symposium. The endorsement of this proposal by the aforementioned GAMM-Committee and the cons ent of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) to co-sponsor such a scientific activity paved the way to the IUTAM/IACM Symposium on Discretization Methods in Structural Mechanics in Vienna, Austria, from June 5 to 9, 19SD. The main reason for the rather extensive topic of this Symposium, as reflected by its title, was the merger, at the request of IUTAM, of the original proposal by Prof. H.A. Mang, emphasizing the application of discretization methods to nonlinear structural mechanics, with a proposal by a group of members of the GAMM Committee for Discre tization Methods in Solid Mechanics, from the Federal Republic of Germany, around Prof. G. Kuhn, aimed at the application of the BEM to problems of structural mechanics. After some hesitation the undersigned organizers came to the conclusion that the advantage~ of this merger outweighed the disadvantages. The organization of the scientific program was guided by the intention to present an unbiased view on the capacity of the FEM, the BEM, and of combinations of the two methods as timely tools for the numerical solution of challenging problems in the field of structural mechanics. The active support by the members of the Scientific Committee, which is gratefully acknowledged, facilitated the realization of this intention. The 42 oral presenta tions from leading experts in the area of computational mechanics gave a good impression of recent trends in discretization methods in structural mechanics. In some of these contri butions fundamental mathematical and/or mechanical problems related to these methods were treated. Some other contributions were devoted to the application of discretization methods to structural analysis of beams, plates, shells, etc. A large segment of the presen tations consisted of investigations of various mechanical phenomena, such as instability, vibrations, crack propagation, etc., by means of the FEM or the BEM. The book contains written versions of 40 out of the 42 oral presentations. The manuscripts were to be submitted approximately two months after the Symposium, al lowing the authors to consider comments from the discussion of their presentations.
