Indeed, 76 papers were submitted, from24 different countries (13 Europeanand 11 non European),confirming the international status of the conference. Once reviewed, 45 papers were accepted for publication in the present LNCS volume. In all, 23 papers were scheduled for oral presentation in single-track sessions, and 22 papers were presented as posters, withpreliminaryplenarysessionswithveryshortpresentationsofthese posters. Three invited speakers gave lectures on topics ranging from connected fieldstothetheoreticalfoundationsofdiscretegeometry:DineshManocha(Uni- versityofNorthCarolinaatChapelHill,USA),UllrichKo¨the(UniversityofHei- delberg, Germany) and Jean-Pierre Reveilles (University of Auvergne, France). Building on the experience of the previous editions, this edition was the oc- casion to remodel the paper selection process in order to improve the overall quality of the conference. These changes were based on an update and redefi- nition of the topics covered by the conference, in such a way that most of the present-day works in discrete geometry naturally fit in one topic. The members oftheProgramCommitteewerethenchosenfortheirexpertiseinthesedifferent topics.Theysupervisedthereviewingprocessofthepapersrelatedtotheirtopic. Hereby, we would like to thank them for the important part they have played in the careful reviews. Furthermore, this would not have been possible without the support and advice of the Steering Committee members who guided us in thisrenewalprocess.Lastbutnotleast, weareindebtedtothereviewersforthe remarkableworktheyhaveaccomplished. We arealsogratefultoalltheauthors who answered to the call for papers of DGCI, and to the invited speakers who kindly accepted our invitation. DGCI2008wassupportedbytheInternationalAssociationforPatternRecog- nition (IAPR), and is the main conference associated with the Technical Com- mittee 18 on Discrete Geometry of the IAPR. We also would like to express our gratefulness to the Ecole Sup´erieureChimie Physique Electronique de Lyon (CPE)forhostingthiseventandprovidingallthenecessaryinfrastructuralsup- port. We finally thank our sponsoring institutions for providing the financial support essential for a successful event.
