Its true weight is determined by the imprint it leaves on lives—through content that begets timeless and transforming results. By that measure, this book weighs a ton! And I’m pleased to be asked to invite you into its pages—a foreword intended to prompt you forward. John L. Amstutz, the author, has characterized the heart of that “call” that leaders in the living Church have always been intended to address: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). He has given us these pages as a reflection of what has characterized his own life mission for the thirty-five years I have known him. John is serious about Jesus’ call to “make disciples.” It’s the only way I have ever known him to be, and it has been the focus of his entire ministry. Through this handbook, John has framed a resource to enable Christian leaders to grasp and apply the elements of effec- tive discipleship and the multiplication of disciples and, thereby, churches. His work directs us to Jesus’ plan for making disciples, and also helps us sense the Holy Spirit’s passion for relentless advance of the Gospel until the Savior’s return. This handbook is a tool to serve the whole Body of Christ—a fundamental pri- ority of our movement, which is dedicated to “worldwide and interdenominational evangelism.” Two primary values compel both the Foursquare movement and our release of this publication: 5 6| Disciples of All Nations 1. We want to focus the purpose and the power Jesus gives believers when the Holy Spirit “comes upon” them—target- ing global witness to His saving life and power. 2. We want to fulfill that mission in partnership with all who bear Jesus’ Name—teaming with His servants throughout the whole Church to reach and teach (disciple) then plant and establish local churches (evangelize)—always, every- where, and beyond sectarian smallness. As you enter these pages, I invite you to experience the promise of God’s Kingdom grace and power in the face of pro- found need in our world. The whole Church is being called back from superficial notions that “church growth” is what Jesus planned, when in fact it was (and is) “people growth” that advances His Church as His disciples sink their roots in His Word, on the banks of the Holy Spirit’s stream of nourishing resource through His presence and gifts. Rooted in those realities, which define how the Church was conceived and how it will multiply life to the nations, we open to Christ’s timeless promise and potential for our dynamic enablement and durable fruitfulness—unto “continuous mission until He comes”—as His disciples, and as His disciple-makers. Jack W. Hayford Founding Pastor, The Church On The Way Acknowledgements The contributions of many made this manual possible. Don McGregor, missionary, strategist, teacher, and friend has been an exemplary practitioner who has both modeled and men- tored a generation of Foursquare missionaries in the making of disciples of the nations. Frank Greer, Ted Olbrich, Lee Schnabel, and Mark Shaw are among numerous missionaries who have been instrumental in developing national church movements. Their stories from the field represent the many more that could be told, including those of Wilson Badejo, Leslie Keegel, and Josue Bengston, national leaders who have led their countries in discipling nations. The teaching and writing of field missionar- ies Greg Fisher, Bill Kieselhorst, Glen Mickel, and the late John Louwerse contributed significantly to understanding, communi- cating, and implementing the developmental process in many countries. Special words of thanks go to Johnell Loop, who patiently oversaw the development of this manual; to Gary Matsdorf, who wrote the accompanying study guide; to Wanda Brackett, who edited the entire manuscript; to Mark Mickel, who created the cover design; to Michelle Glush who formatted the text; and to Rick Wulfestieg, who facilitated and expedited publication. The encouragement of Jonathan Hall, the director of Foursquare Missions International, and that of his predecessor, Mike Larkin, greatly aided the release and distribution of this manual. The foreword by Pastor Jack W. Hayford certainly does “prompt us forward” in making disciples of all nations; it clearly expresses the heart of our Savior, Jesus Christ, to whose glory this work is dedicated. 7
