However, the book would not have been written at all if my son, a previouslyhealthyandlivelychild, hadnot, followingtreatmenttocure leukaemia at the age of three in 1989, acquired severe brain injury, leavinghimspastic–quadriplegic.Thisencounterwithdisabilitychanged the life of my family. Further, my daughter, born during the time of her brother’streatment, laterreflectedacaringattitudetowardsherbrother whichinspiredthefiel dworkforthebookBrothersandSistersof Disabled Children (Burke 2004). Her younger brother was born three months prematurelyinNovember1990.He,attheageof18months,wasdiag- nosed with spastic diplegia, and at the time of writing uses a powered wheelchair to enable his mobility. My family experience motivated my research interest in understanding the situation of other families living with childhood disability.
